Break-in

James Dean Elswick, who led law authorities on a high-speed, rush-hour chase on March 22, was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with three felony crimes in connection with a residential break-in.

The 35-year-old Elswick, who did not disclose a home address, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.

Elswick was accused of breaking into a home March 16, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Property with a listed value of $300 was recovered and returned to its owner.

Burning case

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office solved a suspicious fire Monday by arresting a 46-year-old man and charging him with burning an unoccupied building at 866 Camp Jubilee Road near Seven Springs.

Timothy Gene Outlaw of Pineview Cemetery Road, Seven Springs, was accused of setting the building on fire Saturday, Detective Sgt. Mike Kabler said. Outlaw was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.

Nine hurt in wrecks

Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $34,350 in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.

*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle, hit-and-run collision at 5:50 a.m. Monday at U.S. 70 and Miller's Chapel Road, Goldsboro police said. Hilda J. Chase, 56, of Forest Knolls Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The report said Ms. Chase's northbound car collided with a westbound tractor-trailer truck. The other driver fled, the report said. Damages were set at $2,500.

*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 6:25 p.m. Sunday on Claridge Nursery Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Devon Ahmad Swain, 18, of West Chestnut Street was released after emergency-room treatment. His eastbound car had run off the right side in a curve, then careened out of control off the left side and struck a ditch and trees. He was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired. His car, valued at $5,000, was demolished.

*Two people were injured in a one-car wreck at 4:30 p.m. Saturday on N.C. 222 near Stan Ray Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Bryan O'Neill Moore Jr., 17, of Shadywood Drive, was released after emergency-room treatment. His passenger, Chandela Elliott, 15, of Kearney Lane, was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Moore said he tried to avoid a dog in the road and the westbound car ran off the right side and struck a ditch. Moore was charged with reckless driving. Damages were put at $2,750.

*A car was demolished in a crash at 6:08 a.m. Friday on Nahunta Road near Radford Road, the Highway Patrol said. Troopers said the eastbound car ran off the right side, came back across the center line, then ran off the right side, struck a ditch, went down a bank and overturned. The driver, Ricky Dupree Williams, 25, of North George Street, was charged with driving while impaired. His auto was valued at $5,000.

*A 12-year-old girl was injured at noon Friday when the all-terrain vehicle that she was operating crashed into a parked pickup truck on a paved road at Busco Beach, the Highway Patrol said. Britney Nicole McCullen of Cleatus Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The car was registered to Claude Ray Wilson of Vance Street. Damages were set at $1,500.

*A motorcyclist from Wilson was injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:12 a.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Mount Carmel Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. Joseph Pumfret Terry III, 53, was listed today in stable condition in intensive care at Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other motorist, Michael Jimmy King, 18, of Airport Road, Pikeville, had left a gas station parking lot, headed south and then started a left turn onto Mount Carmel Church Road, the report said. Terry, who also was going south, swerved to the left in trying to avoid the van, but the vehicles collided, the report said. King was charged with a yield violation.

*Damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car crash at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Perkins Mill and O'Berry Center roads, the Highway Patrol said. A northbound driver, Samantha Ann Michelle Rhodes, 17, of Shadowy Lane, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The car that she was driving collided with a westbound auto driven by Elaine G. Pounds, 44, of Clayton.

*Three people were injured and damages were fixed at $6,600 in a two-vehicle wreck at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at U.S. 117 and Arrington Bridge Road (N.C. 581), the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Manuela E. Williams, 46, and her passengers, Alicia Williams, 17, and Ivan Spencer, 33, all of Old Grantham Road, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Williams was going north, and the other driver, Josa Lewis Raynor, 47, of Isler Street was going west. Both drivers said they had the green light. No charges were filed.

Break-in

About $5,585 worth of property was stolen between Friday and Monday from a home in the 1500 block of East Mulberry Street, according to a Goldsboro police report.

The resident, George Ritko, reported the theft of jewelry, a stereo system, a tobacco jar, suitcases, a printer, candlesticks, figurines, wines, running shoes, pots and pans, a car title and about $500 in coins.

The thief had smashed a window to get inside, the report said.

Sex charge

A 48-year-old man was arrested Monday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with failure to register as a sex offender.

Ricky Stanley Jones of N.C. 581 North was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond on the Class F felony charge. Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour made the arrest.

Missing

A 17-year-old Goldsboro boy was reported missing Monday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Charles Keyron Singleton of 128 N. Oak Forest Road was described as black, 5-feet-10 and 220 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion.

When he was seen last at 12:30 p.m. Monday, he was wearing a green shirt, blue jeans and brown shoes. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
