Duplin County is participating Saturday in Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, the nation's largest annual community improvement program.
The Duplin County Board of Commissioners have waived the tipping fee for items resulting from the day's clean-up activities. For Saturday only, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m, people will not have to pay the usual $40 per ton charge for household furnishings such as couches, tables, chairs, mattresses and box springs, construction debris resulting from do-it-yourself renovations and household garbage.
The $15 per ton fee for yard waste also will be waived. Disposal for tires, scrap metals, and major appliances is always free. Commercial loads and contractors will be charged the normal fee.
There are several disposal areas at Duplin County's old landfill location. There is a separate area for major appliances and scrap metals, an area for yard waste, blocks and bricks, a storage trailer for tires. There is also a transfer station for furnishings, construction debris, and just plain old garbage.
Customers can simply pull upon the scales and an attendant directs them to the appropriate disposal area.
More information about the clean-up efforts may be obtained by calling 910-289-3091.
