An 18-year-old driver was killed Sunday evening in a one-car wreck on New Hope Road near its intersection with Miller's Chapel Road, the Highway Patrol said today.

The victim was identified as Anthony Devon King of 134 Beston Drive, LaGrange.

State Trooper J.M. Holloman said the westbound car that King was driving came out of a right curve, crossed the center line, ran off the left side, struck a ditch, started to overturn and struck a tree.

King suffered massive injuries, officials said. He was taken by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Based on the evidence at the scene, Holloman estimated the car's speed at 80 mph in a 55-mph zone. Holloman wrote in his report that excessive speed and reckless driving contributed to the wreck.

The wreck occurred at 5:55 p.m., about eight-tenths of a mile east of May Road, according to the trooper's report.

King not wearing a seat belt. He was driving a 1995 Mazda that was registered to Jewell Maxine Sutton of Herring Road in LaGrange. The car, valued at $7,000, was destroyed.

Elroy and New Hope volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.

The fatality was the fifth this year on Wayne County roads, including one in Goldsboro.
