Debra Hernandez, the chief nursing officer at Wayne Memorial Hospital for nearly three years, leaves next month to take over the same job at Durham Regional Hospital.

Hospital officials have announced an interim chief nursing officer until a permanent replacement for Ms. Hernandez can be found.

Karen Southard, the administrative director for clinical operations, will take over as chief nursing officer at Wayne Memorial on April 11. She has worked at the hospital in several leadership positions since August, 2002, said William Paugh, the president of Wayne Memorial.

In addition to overseeing nurses at the hospital, her interim duties will include leading the patient services division.

Prior to joining the Wayne Memorial staff as vice-president of patient services, Ms. Hernandez had worked in the same capacity at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.
