Gateway riders will finally have places to escape the rain, wind or sun as they wait for the bus.
After years of delays, the Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority recently received 11 shelters to erect at some of the most heavily used bus stops.
City workers will soon begin installing the first one at the Wayne County Social Services and Health departments. The other shelters are planned for K-Mart, Berkeley Mall, Piggly Wiggly on Lionel Street, Eastpointe mental health agency, Courtyard Apartments, and Seymour Homes, Westhaven, Fairview, Lincoln Homes, Woodcrest and Elmwood Terrace public housing units.
The authority has agreements to do nine of those locations and hopes to clear the legal hurdles for the final two.
The shelters will be closed on three sides. A bench will be mounted inside. The remaining space will be for wheelchairs.
Gateway received the shelters, but not the directions for setting them up, in December from Brasco Inc. of Detroit, Mich. With instructions now in hand, city crews will start work on the shelters as they finish the Ash Street sidewalk project.
The shelters have been discussed since the city bus service began in 2000, but they've been held up by red tape. It took the authority three years to get state approval and the shelters were delayed last year as the authority's board hired new management.
