Bad day
A 24-year-old Dudley man did not have a good day Monday.
Joseph Daniel Figgins of Emmaus Church Road was accused of choking a woman in the afternoon, taking his mother's car at night, driving while impaired and assaulting three police officers after he was arrested, authorities said.
Figgins allegedly got into trouble first by assaulting Rose Ann Barwick of Waldrop Lane, Dudley. She was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Then Figgins' mother told a Wayne County sheriff's deputy that her son had taken her 1989 Toyota at about 10 p.m. without her permission.
A short time later, Goldsboro police Officer K.D. Perry stopped a car matching the description of the missing auto on North William Street. Perry charged Figgins with driving while impaired. When Figgins was taken to the courthouse, he refused a breath-analysis test. According to the report, as officers tried to put Figgins in jail, he assaulted them by kicking them and spitting on them. Figgins was charged with felony assault by strangulation, assault inflicting serious injury and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He also was charged with driving while impaired, felony malicious conduct by a prisoner, three counts of assault on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He was jailed without bond.
