Murder trial
to be non-capital
A 28-year-old Goldsboro man will not be tried for his life in last year's murder of another Goldsboro man.
Leandren Andre Wilson of North Kornegay Street was charged with first-degree murder in connection with fatal shooting of Corey Lavon Grantham, 26, of Nor Am Road, Pikeville.
A pre-trial hearing was held last week in Wayne County Superior Court. Judge Jerry Braswell of Goldsboro ruled that Wilson would not face the death penalty.
Braswell scheduled Wilson's trial for Aug. 15 after pretrial motions on July 11.
Grantham's body was found early July 11 near Corporate Drive and Clingman Street. After an investigation, Goldsboro police obtained a warrant for Wilson's arrest.
Wilson's photograph appeared the next day in the News-Argus. Two days later, a confidential informant, carrying a copy of the newspaper, told Benson police Detective Sarah Harris that Wilson was in her city. The detective confirmed the information with Goldsboro police, found Wilson and arrested him. Wilson was returned to Goldsboro, where he has been held in the Wayne County Jail.
Homes destroyed
Two mobile homes were destroyed Sunday in fires, according to Wayne County Sheriff's Office reports. No one was injured.
The cause of a fire at a home at 216 Odom Farm Lane, Dudley, in Pleasant Acres Mobile Home Park was turned over to sheriff's detectives for investigation. Arrington, Dudley and Mar Mac volunteer firefighters answered the 10:50 a.m. alarm. The home, owned by Debbie Jeannette Alford, was valued at $12,000. Contents, valued at $8,000, also were destroyed.
A resident at 118 Mary Lane in P&D Trailer Park told deputies that he had been smoking and had fallen asleep on his living room couch. Mitchell Ray Goff woke up to find his home on fire and managed to get outside. The home, valued at $9,000, and contents, valued at $5,000, were destroyed. Rosewood and Oakland volunteer firefighters responded to the 6:39 p.m. call.
Wounded
A 25-year-old Goldsboro man was wounded before dawn Sunday, and Goldsboro police are looking for a suspect.
John Oscar Mumford of Whitted Court was shot in the back and left arm at about 3 a.m. in an apartment in the 400 block of North Carolina Street, police said.
Mumford was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized and then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. His condition was not immediately known.
The suspect was described as black, about 20 years old, 5-feet-4 and 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.
Arrested
A second Goldsboro teen-ager was arrested Sunday by Goldsboro police and charged with the armed robbery of the Goldsboro Deli at 1605 Royall Ave. Octavion Godette, 16, of East Walnut Street also was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, second-degree trespass and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $36,500 secured bond.
Driver hurt
One driver was injured and damages were estimated at $51,200 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A trucker was charged with failure to reduce speed Sunday after the tractor-trailer that he was driving struck a parked car and a guardrail on the U.S. 70 bypass, near North Spence Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Damages were set at $10,200.
*Damages were estimated at $6,000 in a two-car collision at 3 p.m. Friday at East Beech Street and North Audubon Avenue, police said. Demario Ramon Accoo, 25, of Dawson Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Damage was estimated at $20,000 to a tractor-trailer that overturned at 9:03 a.m. Thursday on Stevens Mill Road near the Johnston County line, the Highway Patrol said. The trucker, Gregory Eugene Beasley, 29, of Benson, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. He was driving a log truck for Dixieland Timber Co. of Dunn.
*Damages were set at $10,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 111 and Dollard Town Road, the Highway Patrol said. Nicholas Jay Hall, 21, of Ann Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A driver was injured in a one-truck wreck at 7:20 p.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Saulston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kenneth Wayne Helms, 36, of Wayne Memorial Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was charged with driving left of center. Damage was put at $5,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A door glass and a pickup truck were damaged by gunfire Sunday night in the 1300 block of North George Street,. The resident, J.C. Barnes, estimated damage to the home at $500. The truck's owner, James Isaac Broadhurst of Goldsboro, set damage at $600.
*A .380 handgun, two necklaces, a bracelet and a diamond ring were stolen between Feb. 26 and Saturday from an apartment in the 1900 block of Rose Street. The resident, B.F. Jackson, said the property was worth $5,400.
*A tan, four-door 1991 Buick Park Avenue was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from the 1900 block of North William Street. Roland J. Parker of Mount Olive put a $1,800 value on the car.
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Four video games were stolen Saturday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Shady Creek Drive. David H. Pate, estimated the value of the games at $100 and damage at $200.
*About $1,500 worth of scrap stainless steel was stolen between Saturday and Sunday from a dump truck in the 300 block of Ditchbank Road. Robert L. Webber, said about one-quarter of the load was missing.
Drugs, weapons
A 31-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Saturday night by Goldsboro police on North Virginia Street and charged with felony drug and weapons violations. Wayne Earl Moore of Oakwood Street was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Break-in charges
A Goldsboro teen-ager was arrested Saturday night by Goldsboro police at Herman Park Center and charged with two felonies. Lamonta Holmes, 16, of Marvin Street was charged with breaking and entering and larceny. He also was held on two outstanding arrest orders. Holmes was placed in the Wayne County Jail under $15,000 bond.
Sex registry
A Mount Olive man has been arrested by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with failure to register as a convicted sex offender.
Demetrius Dashon Davis, 20, of Short Street was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of an $8,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 15-year-old girl was reported missing Saturday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Rochelle Jane Cabell of 100 Courtland Place was described as black, 5-feet-4 and 116 pounds with a slim build, short brown hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 4:30 p.m. Friday, she was wearing a white shirt, blue pants, a beige jacket and white shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
