Volunteer Wayne/RSVP is growing. We are now assisting 70 community agencies with their volunteer needs. That translates to a multitude of diverse volunteer opportunities throughout Wayne County. At Volunteer Wayne/RSVP, we recognize that all people have time and talents to share, and that communities are strengthened when people connect across their differences through volunteer service. Whether you have just one hour a month, or several days a week to share, we can help you find a rewarding experience where your contribution makes a difference in Wayne County.

The following is just a sampling of opportunities in the local area.

ALZHEIMER'S

CAREGIVER

WORKSHOP

Would you like to know more about understanding and caring for individuals with Alzheimer's and dementia? Volunteers who would like training, especially Stevens Ministers, and family members in the caregiving role should attend. Build skills, learn about available resources, and have the opportunity to share with others. Contact Anne Paugh at 919 759-2267 to pre-register. The workshop will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Goldsboro from 9:30 a.m until 1:30 on Tuesday, March 29th. There is no charge for the workshop. A light lunch will be provided.

EMBRACE

THE MIRACLE

Help prepare new mothers for their role as a parent with this ongoing project. Each newborn in Wayne County receives a basket of educational items and samples. In just about one hour of your time, you can assist in delivering the baskets to the maternity ward at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Some light lifting -- under 30 pounds -- may be involved. Individuals or groups may participate. Dates: March 14-18, 21-25, March 28- April 1, April 4-8, 1-15, 18-22, and April 25-29. Flexible times are available for assembly of Spanish baby baskets. Other support activities can use volunteers in baby asket data entry (days and times optional) and assistance with newsletters the last and first week of each month. Also, you can help give upcoming kindergarten students a good start. On April 8, backpacks will be distributed to registering kindergarten children and their parents at elementary schools throughout Wayne County.

MUSIC TO THEIR EARS

A pianist or other musician can bring joy to psychiatric patients during their lunchtime. You will have the flexibility to coordinate appropriate music. Must be 18 years of age and able to interact with psychiatric patients.

KEEP CHILDREN SAFE

Home Alone Program is looking for volunteers to teach first aid, Internet safety, and child abduction prevention for program that begins April 6. Time commitment varies from as little as six hours (including training) to as much time as you wish with this worthwhile program. Retired teachers, law enforcement, emergency and medical personnel are ideally suited for this opportunity; however, those skills are not necessarily needed.

ADVOCATE FOR ABUSED CHILDREN

Thank you, Wayne County, for your response to this need. One by one individuals are responding to this advocacy for children. However, the need is tremendous and more volunteers are needed. Wayne County has been designated by the state as a county of "Critical Need" as a result of the increase of child abuse and neglect. Do you have a minimum of five hours a month to investigate the needs of a child and advocate for the best interests of that child? This program provides advocacy services for children who are involved in the court system as a result of abuse, neglect and dependency. Last year over 425 children were served in the Wayne, Lenoir, and Greene counties through this program.

Blood drives are scheduled March 14, 21 and 26.
