Wayne Country Day School will reopen Monday, says its headmaster. The school has been closed since a severe storm Tuesday damaged several classrooms.
Headmaster Eddie Radford said today that most of the damage to Wayne Country Day was to the roof. Three classrooms - a fourth-grade room, a room used for Latin and theater classes and the Spanish room - as well as a counseling and tutoring room, and the teacher's lounge were ruined, Radford said.
"It was mostly water damage," he said. "Everything had to be taken out, thrown out. We saved a little bit."
City building inspectors looked the school over early today, Radford said. He said school officials plan to close the three damaged classrooms and set up temporary classrooms in the gym.
The school will be ready to open Monday, Radford said, adding that the faculty and staff at the school have done a superb job in getting things ready for classes to return to normal.
"They have done a great job of helping ... cleaning up, moving desks and chairs," he said.
Radford said parents of lower-grade students will be notified where to drop off their children on Monday morning. He said K-2 students should be dropped off in front of the school building, with the senior parking lot designated as the drop-off point for students in grades 3-5.
Students will meet in the gym, where teachers will conduct them to their classrooms, Radford said.
An estimate of the cost of the damages has not yet been determined, he said.
Meanwhile, Tuesday's storms did minimal damage to public school buildings in Wayne County, said Sprunt Hill, the assistant superintendent for auxiliary services.
"Little things, nothing major," he said today. "A shingle here, a window got cracked there. We're very, very fortunate that we did not receive any extensive damages to our facilities. It could have been a whole lot worse."
Twelve schools reported some damages. The were Grantham Elementary, Mount Olive Middle, Southern Academy, Southern Wayne High, Brogden Primary, Carver Elementary, Eastern Wayne's elementary, middle and high schools, Spring Creek Elementary, Northeast Elementary and Northwest Elementary.
