Man charged

in murder try

A 20-year-old Goldsboro man -- wanted by Goldsboro police on a charge of attempted first-degree murder on New Year's Day -- was arrested Thursday night by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Cedric Levern Smalls of West Chestnut Street was apprehended at about 11:30 p.m. by Deputy Aaron Cantwell during a traffic stop on U.S. 13 South at LJR Lane. Lt. Darryl Overton, A-shift deputies and a search dog assisted in the arrest.

Smalls was accused of shooting Rashid Tarif Adham Taymullah of North George Street in the chest on Jan. 1 in a home in the 100 block of Vanderbilt Circle, Investigator Dwayne Dean said. Taymullah was rushed to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated, admitted and released.

Smalls also was charged with felony first-degree burglary, driving while his license was revoked and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $352,000 secured bond. His first court appearance to determine his legal representation will be held Monday.

A second man, Patrist Ray Drake, 22, of Florence, S.C., also was arrested. He was charged with felony possession of a stolen truck, possession of stolen goods and resisting arrest. He was jailed in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.

Man robbed

A Goldsboro man who was filling gasoline tanks at a store in Grantham was robbed before dawn today by a lone bandit, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.

Lawrence E. Phifer, 42, had stopped at 12:15 a.m. at Grantham Supply at 3388 U.S. 13 South. A man came up behind him, put something in Phifer's back and demanded his money. Phifer surrendered his wallet that contained $19 and personal papers. The robber ran behind the building and left in a vehicle, deputies said.

Phifer could not describe the robber or the vehicle. He said his wallet and other property was worth $81.

Man wounded

A man from Greene County was wounded before dawn today as he was leaving a gas station at 1601 E. Ash St., a Goldsboro police report said.

Kenneth Renn, 32, of Beaver Dam Lane, Snow Hill, was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment, a spokeswoman said today. Renn told police that he was shot in his left leg at about 12:40 a.m. as he left the Kangaroo Express station.

Renn described the assailant as a black man in his 20s, about 6-feet with a heavy build and short black hair. The suspect wore a black jacket and white shoes.

Drug charges

Three men were arrested Thursday by Wayne County authorities and charged with felony drug offenses.

*Charles Nathaniel Brown Jr., 45, of Atlantic Avenue was charged by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad with possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia at a home in the 600 block of Hugh Street. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond. Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers assisted in the investigation.

*Travis Lee Bellamy, 24, of Melodie Lane was charged by the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was jailed in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond. He was arrested during a traffic stop at South Slocumb Street and Courtyard Circle.

*Basher Elijah Baker, 20, of Hugh Street was charged by Goldsboro police with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana in jail and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. His secured bonds were set at $5,400.

Accidents

Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $23,375 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.

*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 12:15 p.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near Lockhaven Drive, Goldsboro police said. Esther W. Holmes, 43, of U.S. 70 East, LaGrange, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Barbara H. Dawson, 62, of U.S. 117 North, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were set at $1,025.

*Damages were estimated at $7,100 in a three-vehicle crash at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at East Ash and North Lionel streets, police said. Latress Nicole Cox, 21, of Thoroughfare Road, was charged with a yield violation.

*A Goldsboro driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday on Blackjack Church Road near Old Grantham Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ruth A. Bryant, 72, of North John Street was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The car that she was driving ran off the left side, struck mailboxes and a tree and then overturned, troopers said. She was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired. Damages were put at $10,250.

*A driver from Dudley was injured in a one-car wreck at 4:33 p.m. Tuesday on Old Mount Olive Road near U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. Rebecca Sue Weksztein, 62, of Genoa Road was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with driving left of center. The car, valued at $5,000, was demolished.
