WARSAW -- A Warsaw area man was killed Monday night in an accidental shooting.
Law officers said Bruce Mason, 38, was returning to his home on Gaston Street when he dropped a handgun he was carrying and it went off, shooting him in the abdomen.
Duplin Sheriff's Captain Stanley Jones said Mason was a truck driver and carried a weapon.
Mason was carrying some other items in his hands at the time of the accident, Jones said, and apparently dropped the pistol on a concrete slab at his front door.
Mason was taken to Duplin General Hospital, but resuscitation efforts failed. Jones said doctors told him that Mason's injuries were too extensive for even a team of surgeons to have been able to save him.
"It's a very tragic thing," Jones said.
