A 38-year-old pedestrian was killed Wednesday night when he was hit by a car as he ran across U.S. 70 near the Wayne Motel, Goldsboro police said.

The victim was identified as David Allen Carlin of 404 S. William St. The death occurred at 11:32 p.m.

When emergency medical technicians arrived, they found Carlin's body in the road and pronounced him dead.

The driver of the car, Kenneth Brian Wright, 18, of Nahunta Pines Drive, Pikeville, was taken to the Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room for treatment of minor injuries. He was later released, police said.

Two witnesses told police that they saw a man try to run across the busy, four-lane divided highway. Wright was merging into U.S. 70 from an exit ramp from Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the Goldsboro bypass, the report said. Carlin was struck near the edge of the right lane. He was knocked 67 feet down the road and stopped in the left lane.

No charges have been filed.

Damage was estimated at $3,500 to Wright's 2003 Pontiac.

The fatality was the first in 2005 on city streets. Two people have been killed on Wayne County roads.
