The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for more heroes again this year.
Heroes are people who raise at least $1,000 during the annual Heroes Campaign. The campaign will be held next month with a kickoff luncheon March 1 at St. Luke Church.
This year's goal is $60,000, said Chuck Waller, the chapter's director. Last year, 49 heroes raised a total of $46,517. Waller said he hopes to get 60 heroes this year.
"Last year we had one person who asked everyone he knew to give $1 or $2 to support the Red Cross and ended up raising $1,500," Waller said.
The first campaign activitity will be a sports memorabilia auction March 8 at Lane Tree Country Club. On March 26, there will be a motorcycle run -- Ride For The Red -- by Capt. Glenn Barnes of the Goldsboro Police Department and his Blue Knights motorcycle club.
The chapter will also sell Red Cross squares for $1 each. A Heroes window is in front of the Red Cross building. Each square that is sold will contain the name of the hero and will be placed in that window during March.
There will be Pennies For A Purpose jugs again this year. Waller explained that these are the big Culligan water jugs that will be distributed to the local schools. The students will decorate the jugs to be judged at three levels -- elementary school, middle school and high school. Winners will receive art supplies.
