Goldsboro considering closing three streets

The city of Goldsboro is considering permanently closing three road sections, due to flooding problems.
The road sections are East Mulberry Street, from Randolph Street to Stoney Creek Lane; Stoney Creek Lane, from Walnut Street to Ash Street; and North Durant Street, from Walnut Street to Ash Street, including an unopened portion of the road.
Combined, the road sections are nearly 3,000 feet long.
The city has posted signs saying that the closures are being considered. A hearing will be held Monday night.
All three of the road sections run between properties that were purchased by the city during its flood-buyout program, following widespread damage in 1999. Those homes have been removed.
But flooding is still a problem in the area. Heavy rain often puts Stoney Creek Lane under water.
The city's police, fire and general services departments all support the plans to close the streets.
The hearing will begin after 7 p.m. in the City Council's chambers, Goldsboro City Hall. The Planning Commission will make a recommendation for the council before its March 7 meeting.
