Driver sentenced
in school bus
accident
A driver has been sentenced in Wayne County District Court to 45 days in jail after a collision last year with a school bus in Goldsboro. Nine people suffered minor injuries in the wreck.
The sentence was suspended on condition that the driver, Niaka Bernard Bryant, 30, of South Slocumb Street, complete a year of unsupervised probation and pay a $150 fine and court costs.
Bryant pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while his license was revoked. The state agreed to dismiss a stoplight violation as part of a plea bargain.
Police said on April 20 a driver ran the red light at Slocumb and East Walnut streets and collided with the school bus. The impact sent the bus into a telephone pole and a tree, and the car careened into a day care center, missing two women on the front porch.
One woman at the day care was struck by flying debris and was injured. The woman, Bryant, the school bus driver and six Goldsboro High School students on the bus were treated for injuries at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Damages to the bus, the car and other property was estimated by Goldsboro police at $19,000.
Parole granted
KENANSVILLE -- A man convicted in Duplin County Superior Court of first-degree murder is being paroled after almost 22 years in prison. Russell Council Judge was convicted Sept. 1, 1982.
The N.C. Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission approved Judge's parole under the mutual agreement parole program. The scholastic and vocational program is a three-way agreement among the commission, the offender and the Division of Prisons. Judge is scheduled to be released March 18.
The state's current structured sentencing law eliminates parole for crimes committed after Oct. 1, 1994. But the commission has the responsibility of paroling offenders who were sentenced under previous guidelines.
Four injured
Four people were injured and three vehicles were demolished in a wreck Monday on Hare Road, south of Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said.
One driver, Jessica L. Heath, 32, of Daryl Drive, and a second driver, Marshall Stephen Yelverton, 53, of Reidtown Road, Fremont, and his passenger, Randall Yelverton, 50, of North Church Street, Eureka, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. The third driver, Alvester Moore, 48, of Tinderwood Drive, was listed today in stable condition at the hospital. Ms. Heath was charged with reckless driving.
The vehicles were valued at a combined $22,000.
In other accidents:
*A driver was injured in a three-vehicle collision at 2:55 p.m. Thursday on North William Street near 11th streets, Goldsboro police said. Karmashia Dianquette Griffin, 27, of Nor-Am Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. Scott Worth Overbee, 32, of Warren Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were set at $2,150.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 in a two-car crash at 4:04 p.m. Thursday on Wayne Memorial Drive near an exit ramp to M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass. Brandy Marie Pearsall, 30, of Maple Street, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 7:11 p.m. Saturday on Nahunta Road near Pikeville-Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. Brandon Scott Jones, 34, of Buck Run Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. He said he had swerved to avoid a deer. No charges were filed. Damage was put at $3,300.
Theft
Two saws, a nailer, an air compressor and a radio were stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a garage at Nova Behavior Health Care at 1602 E. Ash St., Goldsboro police reported. The thief had forced open a door to get inside. The stolen property was valued at $999.
