Four hurt
in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $30,400 in five recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 5:47 p.m. Monday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Parkway Drive, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Joshua Carter III, 49, of Wintergreen Place, and the other motorist, David Keith Brayboy, 21, of Robby Road, LaGrange, and his passenger, Leslie Haynes, 18, of Greenville, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Carter was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*A pickup truck was demolished in a wreck at 12:15 a.m. Sunday on Dollard Town Road near Robinson Drive, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Marco Antonio Hurtado-Avila, 28, of Peachtree Drive was charged with reckless driving and suspicion of driving while impaired. His pickup, valued at $6,000, ran off the left side and struck a tree, troopers said.
*Damages were estimated at $7,400 in a two-vehicle crash at 11:10 a.m. Saturday at U.S. 13 and Tommy's Road, the Highway Patrol said. Sheron Hollowell Bennett, 61, of Greenville was charged with a stoplight violation. The report said the car that she was driving collided with a pickup driven by Kathleen S. Steinbach, 42, of Renee Drive.
*A driver was injured at 10:40 p.m. Feb. 8 when she swerved to avoid carpet that had fallen from another vehicle on Antioch Road near Sawwood Place, the Highway Patrol said. Betty Rose Johnston, 51, of Carla Ann Drive, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. After she had swerved to the left, her car then ran off the right side and overturned, the report said. The car, valued at $2,800, was demolished.
*Damages were set at $9,200 in a two-car collision at 9:05 p.m. Jan. 7 on Emmaus Church Road near Mitchell Road, the Highway Patrol said. Emily Marie Dixon, 18, of Indian Springs Road, Mount Olive, was charged with improper passing. Troopers said Ms. Dixon began to pass in a no-passing zone and then the car that she was driving sideswiped the other car, driven by Shannon Marie Poandl, 18, of Barnwell Road, Dudley. The impact knocked the car that Ms. Poandl was driving off the right side and as it rolled over, the first car collided with it again, pushing it off the left side. The Dixon auto then ran off the right side. Neither driver was injured, the report said.
Bond reduced
Hugh Galloway Pate Jr., charged with 48 counts of child pornography over the Internet, was released from custody Monday after his father posted a $75,000 cash bond.
Pate, 52, a former Greenwood Middle School music teacher, was indicted last week by the Wayne County Grand Jury on a charges brought by the SBI.
Bond was originally set by a magistrate at $250,000. Superior Court Judge Jerry Braswell accepted the bond reduction to which Pate's lawyer, Geoff Hulse, and Assistant District Attorney Jan Kroboth had agreed.
Investigations
Wayne County law enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*About $3,400 worth of furniture was stolen between Saturday and Monday from a mobile home at Life Style Homes at 6051 U.S. 70 East, LaGrange, said the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. Damage was estimated at $500. The stolen furniture included a dinette set, four end tables, two coffee tables and a sofa table.
*A man who was looking at rings Monday at Kay Jewelers in Berkeley Mall grabbed one from a clerk and fled, Goldsboro police said. The half-carat marquise-cut diamond ring was valued at $849. The thief was described as black and 5-feet-6 with a stocky build, wearing a black coat, blue jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt.
