Fire forces
evacuation of
retirement home
MOUNT OLIVE -- The residents and staff at Glenn Care Retirement Village at 600 Smith Chapel Road were evacuated Thursday night because of fire started by a cigarette, officials said.
The fire was put out with a fire extinguisher. Only minimal damage and no injuries were reported.
"They don't know how lucky they were," said Assistant Mount Olive Volunteer Fire Chief Greg Wiggins.
Wiggins said the fire started in a cigarette butt can in a designated smoking area outside of the building. Then it spread quickly to a shrub, melted vinyl around the eaves and filled the building with smoke.
Mount Olive, Calypso and Dudley firefighters answered the 7:30 p.m. call. But someone had put out the fire by the time they arrived within minutes.
The residential doors had been closed, and that part of the building had little smoke damage. The residents were allowed to return within about 15 minutes, Wiggins said. Damage was estimated at $200.
Drug charges
Two people were arrested Thursday by Wayne County authorities in Goldsboro and charged with felony drug offenses.
Rossie Lee Coley, 27, of Brentwood Drive, Dudley, was charged by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine on James White Court and misdemeanor resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Carolyn Anne Smith, 33, of East New Hope Road, LaGrange, was charged by Goldsboro police with possession of cocaine and possession of Ecstasy and misdemeanor possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a concealed handgun at East Elm and South Claiborne streets. She was jailed in lieu of a $12,500 secured bond.
Robbery arrest
A Goldsboro woman was assaulted Thursday night by another woman and robbed of her eyeglasses, a pack of cigarettes, $1.50 and personal papers, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The other woman was arrested later and charged with armed robbery.
Pamela Jo Hicks, 43, of North James Street told Goldsboro police that she was visiting a few doors away at about 10 p.m. The other woman pulled a knife and demanded her money, the report said. When Ms. Hicks said she had none, the woman threw her on the floor, choked her, went through her pockets and cut her twice with a knife, the report said.
Roberta Lynn Leonti, 36, of North James Street was arrested and charged with felony robbery. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond.
Driver hurt
A driver from Mount Olive was injured Wednesday when his car and a tractor-trailer collided at N.C. 55 and Drummersville Road in Seven Springs, the Highway Patrol said. Edgardo Flecha, 40, of West Main Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
The eastbound trucker, Kent Maurice Gardner, 41, of Fayetteville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The report said Flecha was slowing to make a left turn. Damages were estimated at $3,900.
Car break-in
A combination radio and compact disc player was stolen Thursday night from a car in a parking lot in the 1400 block of Royall Avenue, Goldsboro police reported. The thief smashed a window to get inside.
The car owner, Marvin Earl Ford of Pikeville, put a $200 value on the stolen property and estimated damage at $300.
