Give kids a smile

On Friday, Feb. 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., students from Northwest Elementary School and Rosewood Elementary School will be participating in "Give Kids a Smile Day" at Wayne Community College.

Wayne County Public Schools, the Wayne County Dental Society and the North Carolina Oral Health Section are sponsoring the dental sealant project.

This is the 11th year for the project, and it is being held in conjunction with Children's Dental Health Month. Approximately 40 volunteers from local dental practices will serve 100 students on Friday. Students are chosen to participate in the project based on dental need.

The goal is to prevent dental disease through preventative care and education. The U.S. Surgeon General's Office says more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related illness. Other studies have called dental care the most prevalent unmet health need among American children.

Auditions

Auditions for "Spoon River Anthology" will be held on Monday, Feb. 14, and Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 4-6 p.m. in Moffatt Auditorium on Wayne Community College's main campus.

Adults from the community and college students, faculty and staff are invited to try out.

Actors do not need to call in advance or bring any materials. Auditions will involve readings from selected monologues. Anyone who cannot come to the scheduled auditions but wants to be involved should contact director Rosalyn Lomax at 735-5151, ext. 328 for an appointment.

Performances are scheduled for April 14-17 at the college.
