The Wayne County Board of Education recognized 20 teachers Monday night who have been certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

The teachers were among 1,675 newly-certified teachers and counselors across North Carolina.

North Carolina has more than 8,000 nationally certified teachers, the most in the nation.

Wayne Schools Superintendent Steve Taylor praised the teachers for their accomplishment.

"Our hats off to them, their families, principals, and the folks at the schools working with them," Taylor said.

Each teacher received a certificate and a stipend check. Board member Shirley Sims, who made the presentations, said, "This is a great night for Wayne County public schools, to have this many teachers with National Board certification at one time. We're so very proud of you. Not only do you enhance your classroom but you also serve as a role model to other teachers in your school."
