2 homes, shed
damaged in fires
Unattended cooking was blamed for two fires that caused about $17,000 in damages in homes in Goldsboro, fire officials said today. No one was injured.
A stove was left on accidentally before dawn today at a home at 112 Pinewood Drive and ignited cabinets and other property. Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said the fire was confined to the kitchen.
Damage was estimated at $4,000 to the home and $6,000 to the contents. The home, owned by Vernon Parker, was valued at $79,000, and contents were valued at $40,000, Boyette said.
Fourteen firefighters answered the 1:20 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They needed an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $5,000 to a rental home at 507 N. Andrews Ave. The predawn blaze caused about $2,000 in damages to contents, Boyette said.
The home, rented by Angel White, is valued at $80,000, and contents are valued at $5,000. The homeowner was listed as Paul Bridgers of Goldsboro.
Thirteen firefighters responded to the 3:54 a.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car. They needed about an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
A storage building and its contents were destroyed Sunday afternoon in a fire at Langston Trailer Park at 3118 Central Heights Road.
Fire Engineer Melvin Smith said the resident, Charlotte Edwards, had installed a drop cord to a freezer in the building, then went to a nearby store to stock the freezer and returned to find it on fire.
While the cause of the fire was undetermined, Smith said the drop cord may have ignited paint and two kerosene heaters in the shed. The building was valued at $500, and contents were valued at $200.

Three hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $19,800 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,500 in a two-vehicle collision at 2:01 p.m. Saturday on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, near the North William Street exit, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Donald James Kennedy, 17, of Croom Drive, and his passenger, Stacy Garner, 16, of Gainey Drive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Larry James Littrell, 47, of Beniford Drive, Pikeville, was charged with following too closely.
*Damages were estimated at $5,300 in a two-vehicle collision at 7:20 p.m. Saturday on Wayne Memorial Drive near 11th Street, police said. One driver, Benjamin Franklin Wyche, 18, of Brandy Avenue, LaGrange, was charged with a safe-movement violation and failure to carry a driver's license after the rear-end collision. The other driver was Tequila S. Garner, 17, of North Third Street, Calypso.
*A driver was injured in a one-car wreck at 4:45 a.m. Thursday on Community Drive near Shelton Street, the Highway Patrol said. Dena Ray Lipscomb, 34, of Stan Ray Road, Fremont, was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Her car skidded off the right side as she braked in a curve and struck a ditch, the report said. No charges were filed. The car, valued at $1,000, was demolished.
*Damage was put at $5,000 in a one-car wreck at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday on Stoney Creek Church Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said. The westbound motorist, Grant Allen Williams, 17, of Spring Street, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The car ran off the right side in a curve, came back on the road, crossed the center line, ran off the right side again and overturned, the report said. Williams was not hurt.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A thief damaged a wall at a vehicle repair shop, got inside, took some keys and then stole a customer's van, police said. The white 1994 Mazda MPV, valued at $4,000, was owned by Khoong Pheng Chow of Goldsboro. Damage at Best and Sons at 4303 U.S. 70 East was set at $100.
*Clothing and food were stolen Sunday after a car window was smashed in an alley behind the 100 block of West Walnut Street, police said. The stolen property, valued at $210, was owned by James Leslie Thompson of Goldsboro. Damage was put at $150 to the car, owned by G. Kent Thompson of Goldsboro.
*A thief assaulted a resident early Sunday, damaging a wall, then stole her phone, $50, a jacket and keys, police said. Tessa Jones of Pineview Avenue estimated the value of her property at $267 and damage at $200.
*A silver and red Eton scooter was stolen Sunday night from the Winn-Dixie parking lot at 1805 Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. The owner, Timothy Raymond Allen of Goldsboro, said the scooter was worth $850.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A cordless drill was stolen between Thursday and Saturday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Ogallalah Drive near Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Allen Lee Holloman, put a $30 value on the drill and set damage at $70.
*An unknown amount of money was stolen between Friday and Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Farmstead Circle, deputies said. The resident, E.J. Hicks, estimated damage at $110.
Drug charge
A 24-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Saturday night by Goldsboro police at Olivia Lane and South Audubon Avenue and charged with a felony drug offense.
Brandon Kenyawn Griffin of Ivy Street was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond.
