Circuit City won't open at Berkeley Commons

Circuit City will not open a store at Goldsboro's Berkeley Commons as had been planned, says developer Connell Radcliff.
Radcliff, a principal of 1st Carolina Properties, said he hoped another tenant would take the space that Circuit City would have occupied, but none has been identified.
Radcliff said it was Circuit City's decision to change its plans, not his. The company has operated both small and large stores and the one scheduled for Goldsboro was small. It "decided not to open the smaller stores," Radcliff said.
Circuit City would have been in a 20,503-square-foot lot beside what will become Bed, Bath and Beyond. Other anchor stores in Berkeley Commons will be Ross Dress for Less and TJ Maxx.
While those stores will debut with the shopping center in fall 2005, the store that replaces Circuit City will not open until spring 2006, Radcliff said.
Radcliff said paperwork was finished Friday that will bring a free-standing Chic-Fil-A restaurant to the shopping center.
Several possibilities remain for the center. The developer has been talking with banks and restaurants for the space.
Radcliff hopes that several small shops will open in the center as well. "We have been speaking with sporting goods, jewelry, footwear and women's apparel stores."
Site preparation is under way at the corner of North Berkeley Boulevard and Parkway Drive. Two apartment buildings are being removed.
