Brazen thief
steals purse
A thief stole a purse from a Goldsboro senior citizen in her driveway at lunchtime Friday, then calmly got into a car and drove away, Goldsboro police report.
Sarah Ella Haggins, 87, told police that she was returning from shopping around 12:45 p.m. and was unloading items from her trunk when a car stopped in front of her home in the 1500 block of South John Street.
A man approached her, she said, carrying a butcher knife, she said. He reached up, cut her purse strap and grabbed the purse. Then he walked back to his car and drove away.
The suspect was described as a black male, around 5 feet 11 inches tall and around 225 pounds with a stocky build. He was wearing a grey wool hat, a gray or blue jacket, and dark pants. He was driving a dark-colored, older model car.
Two hurt
A two-vehicle accident hurt two people Friday morning, Goldsboro police report.
Around 10:20 a.m., a 1992 Honda and a 1994 Ford collided at the intersection of Slocumb Street and Olivia Lane. Both vehicles had $5,000-$6,000 in damage.
A witness told police that the Honda had run the stoplight. Dolly Williams Johnson, 51, of Durham Lake Road, Dudley, was charged with failure to stop at a steady redlight.
The Ford's driver, Kenneth Earl Chadwick, 50, of Prince Avenue, was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment of what were described as minor injuries. A passenger in his car was also shaken up but was not taken to the hospital.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*Someone broke doors and windows at Tienda Aguasteca, a store on N.C. 55 near Mount Olive, Friday morning. Damage was estimated at $4,000. Nothing was reported stolen.
*Billy Joe Dickerson, of Tarheel Pine Drive, reported the theft of a 1993 Buick Park Avenue from the shoulder of U.S. 117 South, near Bojangles. The vehicle broke down Thursday morning and was discovered missing Friday afternoon. The N.C. Highway Patrol said that it had not towed it.
*A double-barrel shotgun, valued at $500, was taken last week from a home in the 1100 block of Old Smithfield Highway. Chrristopher Michael Vaughan reported the theft Friday.
*Benjamin Alexander Casey discovered signs that someone had unsuccessfully tried to break into his home in the 400 block of Yearling Drive on Friday morning.
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A shot was fired into a home in the 1700 block of South Slocumb Street at 7:40 p.m. Friday. Jose Valencia was in the room the bullet struck but was not injured.
*Copper cable was stolen last week from a vacant building at 700 S. George St. and from a utility pole next to the building.
