Community Lenten Services begin Wednesday

The annual Community Lenten Services sponsored by Clergy Living in Faith and Fellowship (C.L.I.F.F.) will begin this Wednesday.
Fourteen local churches are participating in this year's services, which will be held at Best Grove Missionary Baptist Church at 1065 Tommy's Road.
Each service will begin at noon with the singing of hymns and a short sermon based on Colossians 1:12-20, dealing with the role of the Christian, the role of the Savior and the nature of Christ.
An offering will be taken to be divided between United Church Ministries and the H.G.D.C. Community Crisis Center.
Lunch will be served in the church dining hall from 12:30 until 1 the cost will be $3 per person.
Best Grove's pastor, Joe A. Jackson, will deliver the message at the first service. Glenn Phillips will serve as liturgist. Lunch will be provided by Best Grove Church.
Rosalind Ziccardi will be the speaker on Feb. 16. The liturgist will be Alton A. Smith. Lunch will be served by Pinewood Presbyterian Church.
On Feb. 23, Chaplain Reginald Bowens will deliver the message. The liturgist will be William J. Barber II. Greenleaf Christian Church will provide lunch.
The March 2 speaker will be David Brindle. Richard A. Hunt will be the liturgist. Goldsboro Friends Meeting will be in charge of lunch.
The March 9 message will be by Louis Leigh Jr. Chaplain Steward Smith will be the liturgist. First African Baptist Church will serve lunch.
Bishop Anthony Slater will speak on March 16 and the liturgist will be Steve Gillette. Lunch will be provided by Tehillah Church Ministries.
The final service on March 23 will be led by Homer Morris, speaker, and David Harvin, liturgist. Lunch will be served by St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Lent, which originated in the earliest days of the Church, is 40-day period of season of fasting, prayer and repentance to prepare for Easter. It will begin on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 9, and end on Friday, March 25. Sundays are skipped in counting the 40 days because that day commemorates the resurrection.
