Something fishy on Ash Street
There's been something fishy going on at the Arts Council of Wayne County, and very soon you will be able to see what.
Art teachers from several Wayne County schools and some others have been constructing a whale-sized fish that will be placed in the pool outside the Arts Council's building on Ash Street.
It's been built inside and will be moved outside after it's been decorated, maybe as soon as this afternoon.
It's in honor of "Big Fish," this year's selection of Wayne County Reads. The countywide reading event will open officially with a reception at the Arts Council, beginning at 7 p.m. Monday The program will feature Rodney Kemp, a self-described "fish-house liar," who will tell tales of coastal life. News-Argus Editor Emeritus Gene Price will emcee. Coffee and refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.
Candlelight vigil
A candlelight vigil will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Berkeley Mall to promote child abuse and neglect prevention.
The theme will be Life L.I.G.H.T.S. (love, instruction, guidance, hope, time and sponsorship) for Children.
Colleen Kosinski, the Guardian Ad Litem district supervisor, and Judy Pelt, Department of Social Services, will talk about Wayne child abuse and neglect in Wayne County.
About 300 candles will be lighted prior to the vigil to symbolize last year's victims of child abuse and neglect. Eight large remembrance candles will be lit during the vigil to honor those victims who died.
The Carver Heights School choir will perform musical selections. Julia Beth Worley will also perform.
Several community leaders will give reasons for supporting healthy families, children and cities. They are J. D. Evans, county commissioner; Howard Scott, county extension director; and Shari Stewart, Fremont Methodist Preschool.
Sponsoring the event is the Wayne County For Children Council. The free event is open to the public. Those attending will receive keychain lights with positive messages about children.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a Bloodmobile Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m at Spring Creek High School. Donors will receive a free Blood Tour 2005 T-shirt.
Rose Banquet
Youths will be treated to dinner, entertainment and a play at the 2005 Rose Banquet Feb. 23. It will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wayne Center.
There will be a spaghetti supper and entertainment by the Eastern Wayne High School Show Choir. Wayne County 4-H students will perform "The Rose," an abstinence drama.
The banquet is for youths in grades 6 through 12. Youth groups must be accompanied by an adult. Youths will receive a candy rose, a water bottle, a wallet card and door prizes.
Briana Durham, winner of last year's abstinence essay contest, will read her essay.
Admission is free for youths and $6 for adults.
