Trucks destroyed
in building fire
MOUNT OLIVE -- Two trucks that were being restored were destroyed, and a shed and a home were damaged in a fire at 216 Winn St., according to reports.
Alonzo Lee was washing truck parts in a flammable liquid in a storage building on Sunday, and a heater caught the liquid on fire, the report said. A 1975 Chevrolet pickup, valued at $2,500, and a 1976 Chevrolet pickup, worth $3,000, were destroyed.
The storage building, valued at $6,000, sustained about $5,000 in damages, and the contents, worth $10,000, were destroyed, the report said.
The home, owned by Gerald Blizzard and valued at $45,000, had an estimated $5,000 in damages.
Scams reported
Four people reported Monday to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office that they had been called by a con- man. The caller said he represented a government agency and wanted to give them an $8,000 grant in exchange for their banking information, according to reports. The residents refused to disclose any banking information and then notified authorities. The con artists used the name Smith, but all had a foreign accent. Other people, especially in the in Mount Olive area, have reported receiving similar calls.
Game theft
A thief broke into a poker machine at Smokers Emporium at 1818 N. Berkeley Blvd. and stole $499, Goldsboro police reported. An employee with Carolina Amusement Servicestold police that he found that someone had cut the lock on the machine, took the money and then put on another lock. The employee said the thief had put money in the machine, took his winnings, got a receipt, then opened the machine and took more money and more receipts. The thief then took the receipts to the clerk and redeemed them for cash.
Driver hurt
A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $34,150 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $10,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 5:05 p.m. Monday on East Ash Street near Spence Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Kenneth Ray Newkirk, 21, of St. Matthews Road, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Newkirk had left a parking lot and his car collided with a westbound pickup, driven by Daniel Sanchez Gutierres, 27, of Brenn Loop Drive.
*Damages were estimated at $11,650 in a two-car crash at 10:45 a.m. Monday on Rosewood Road near Glenn Drive, the Highway Patrol said. Pablo Reyes, 24, of Damon Drive, Princeton, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was identified as Austin Nathaniel Scott, 26, of Susan Circle.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:15 p.m. Sunday on Stevens Mill Road, west of N.C. 581. James Ray Cox, 48, of Falling Creek Church Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Joyce Diane Thornton, 48, of Morrisville, was charged with driving while impaired. Damages were set at $12,500.
Fair condition
A 16-year-old driver, injured Friday in a collision at U.S. 70 and Community Drive, was listed Monday in fair condition at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, officials said. Stephen Shayne Fischer of Laura Lane.
Break-ins
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A stereo system, a car stereo and a man's clothing were stolen Monday from a home in the 100 block of Brenn Loop Drive. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. Kevin Armstrong put a $528 value on the clothing and a speaker box and set damage at $50. Kenneth Armstrong said the stereo system and car stereo were worth $630.
*Jewelry, prescription medicine and $360 were stolen between from a home in the 100 block of Lake Ridge Drive. Terry Allen Cannon put a $2,631 value on the missing property. The jewelry included a necklace, earrings, a watch and sterling silver pieces.
*A pen and a fire pager were stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Shady Creek Drive, deputies said. David Pate estimated the pen's value at $80 and damage at $100. The Patetown Volunteer Fire Department pager was valued at $250.
Missing
A 23-year-old Goldsboro woman has been reported missing by her husband to Goldsboro police.
Memory Jean Mackay of 214 Ream St. was described as white, 5-feet-6 and 140 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. When she was seen last at 10 a.m. Saturday, she was wearing a dark blue shirt, dark blue pants and diamond earrings. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
