Lee Borden to receive DCA

Lee Borden will receive the Boy Scouts Distinguished Citizen Award this year.
The award will be given during the Tuscarora Council DCA Banquet on April 18 at the Goldsboro Country Club. Tickets are available for donations of $200 and up. Proceeds go to the Tuscarora Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
One person each year is honored with the award. Sherwin Herring was the 2004 recipient. The banquet is the Scouts' biggest fund-raiser and last year netted more than $94,000.
Borden has long been associated with the Boy Scouts. He was a member of Troop 2 and received his Eagle Scout Award in 1975. He has served for many years in various capacities for the council's executive board of directors. He was president of the council for two years. He was chairman of the Major Gifts Division for the 2003.
He is on the council's advisory board and is active on the Troop Committee for Troop 7, which his son joined last fall. His brother, Martin, is also an Eagle Scout, and his sister, Martha, received her Girl Scout Gold Award.
Volunteer organizations have been a large part of his professional life. He is on the board of visitors at UNC, the Goldsboro Family Y board of directors and the Goldsboro Committee of 100, for which he has served as president. He is on the local board of directors for The Little Bank.
For nine years, he was chairman of Wayne Health Corporation and Wayne Memorial Hospital, including two years as chairman. He was also on the board of directors for the state Business Committee for Education and the Wayne County Economic development Commission.
He was chairman of the board for the Wayne County Sheltered Workshop, which is now Wayne Opportunity Center.
He was four years on the United Way executive board, including two years as president. He has also been on the board of directors of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, including a year as president of the Wayne Community Foundation, and the Goldsboro Country Club
Borden was born in Goldsboro, the son of Mary Martin and Ed Borden. He and his wife, Mary, have one daughter and one son.
Borden has a B.S. degree in business administration from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Five years after graduating, Borden returned to Goldsboro to work in his family's textile business, Borden Manufacturing Company. He was the fourth generation of his family to be involved with the company. It had been incorporated in 1900.
He remained with the company as executive vice president until the company was sold in February 1997.
Borden currently is executive vice president of Real Estate Advisors.
He and his family are active at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he has been on the Vestry and senior warden.
In addition to his Eagle, he has won several recognition awards, including the Goldsboro Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, the Wayne County Chamber's Chairman's Award and the Order of the long Leaf Pine from the state of North Carolina.
