Passport deadline extended
The deadline to get passports from the Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office has been extended from Monday to March 31.
Clerk of Court Marshall Minchew said Friday that the deadline was being extended so that the Goldsboro post office could be set up in time to handle passport applications and also take applicants' photographs.
Minchew said his office will stop handling the applications because of an increased workload in the clerk's office. Many applications have come from other counties.
Theft by the numbers
When Ann Best called to alert readers to a telephone scam, she didn't mind giving an editor her telephone number. You can trust editors.
Usually.
But when he had asked for her bank account number, she resisted.
Emphatically.
He was only joking.
Ms. Best had called to report what happened to a relative. The relative, a woman, had gotten a call from a man who said represented a government agency. Because she had been such a great taxpayer, he said, she could get a federal grant that didn't have to be repaid. Up to $8,000, he said.
All he needed was her bank account number so the money could be transferred.
Mrs. Best's relative said if she was due $8,000 the man could simply send her a check. She doesn't give her bank account number to strangers on the telephone.
And neither should anyone else if the scammer calls them, she said.
