House fire
A malfunctioning water pump was blamed Thursday for a fire that damaged a utility house, a carport and a house at 1912 N. Berkeley Blvd., a Goldsboro fire official said.
Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said the resident, Winston Garris, had come home from a store, went to the kitchen, heard a loud pop, went outside and found the utility house under the carport on fire.
"When we pulled up, smoke and flames were showing," Boyette said. "The carport and the utility house were involved in fire."
Then the fire spread to the attic in the carport and then to the attic in the house, but firefighters put it out before it could penetrate the ceiling and the walls of the house. The attic in the house sustained about 75 percent fire damage, the assistant chief said.
Fourteen firefighters answered the 1:42 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car and needed two hours to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
Damage was estimated at $35,000 to the home and $4,000 to contents. The one-floor brick home, owned by Bonnie Smith, was valued at $90,000.
Police had to block Berkeley Boulevard and reroute traffic through Mimosa Park while firefighters put out the fire, Boyette said.
No one was injured.
"It could have been worse," Boyette said.
At the same time, firefighters also capped a gas leak on North James Street.
County volunteer firefighters were put on standby in case of another simultaneous fire in Goldsboro. There was no other fire.
Vehicle stolen
A Goldsboro man left his sport utility vehicle at a gas station to buy coffee Thursday, and when he returned minutes later, the car was gone, according to a Goldsboro police report.
A witness saw a man jump in the 1998 Ford Explorer at about 8 a.m. at the Spence Market at 900 N. Spence Ave. and drive away, the report said. Within an hour, Officer S.O. Hatcher saw the vehicle on West Grantham Street, stopped it and arrested the driver.
Cornel Demoris Beasley, 31, of Clarksville, Tenn., was charged with felony vehicle larceny and not having an operator's license. He also was wanted for an outstanding probation violation. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond.
The sport utility vehicle was to be returned to its owner, Linwood Allen Lambert of Livingston Drive.
Man robbed
A 26-year-old Goldsboro man was assaulted Thursday night in his apartment and robbed of about $120, a Goldsboro police report said.
Jeffery D. Jones of Harding Drive said the other man was mad because Jones would not lend him $40. Jones was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, treated for his injuries and released, a spokeswoman said.
Police later arrested Samuel Robert Stevenson Jr., 48, of South Harding Drive and charged him with felony larceny from the person. Stevenson was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Forty-two compact discs and a leather case were stolen between Monday and Thursday from an unlocked car in the 1400 block of Cuyler Best Road, police said. The owner and resident, Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Michael Kabler, said his property was worth $720.
*About 130 compact discs, two CD cases and a CD player were stolen Thursday after a car window and a dashboard were damaged in the 700 block of North Audubon Avenue, police said. The owner and resident, Marco Edwards, estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,268 and damage at $450.
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A .357 handgun, 20 $1 coins and candy were stolen Thursday from a home in the 100 block of Meadowlark Lane, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged the electric meter and a door in order to get inside. The resident, Patrick Lee Hawkins, estimated the value of the stolen property at $422 and damage at $500.
*A Honda pressure washer was stolen between Sunday and Thursday from the 400 block of Forehand Road, deputies said. The owner, Leland Leroy Lawrence of Goldsboro, put a $1,895 value on the washer.
Missing
Three teen-agers have been reported missing to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
*Miriam L. Glenn, 16, of 303 Ryan Court was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 112 pounds with black hair in a ponytail and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 2 a.m. Thursday, she was wearing a blue short-sleeved top, blue jeans, a blue belt and a black jacket.
*Rochelle Jane Cabell, 15, of 100 Courtland Place was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 112 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 7 a.m. Thursday, she was wearing a tan shirt, blue jeans, white tennis shoes, a dark green and cream sweat jacket and a heavy white jacket.
*Jasmine Monique Yelverton, 14, of 123 Tinderwood Drive was described as black, 5-feet-2 and 115 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, she was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and a black jacket.
