Shooting victim's
condition
upgraded to fair
A 43-year-old man who was beaten and shot numerous times early Jan. 11 near Dudley is listed in fair condition at a hospital, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's official.
Roderick Underwood was assaulted in a mobile home on Everittsville Road. He was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital and then was transferred in critical condition to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. His condition had been upgraded to serious and then to fair, Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said.
Anthony Alphant Lee, 40, of Timothy Street was arrested after an intensive daylong investigation. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder and attempted first-degree arson. He is being held in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $500,000 secured bond.
Raecher said the crime was drug-related but offered no other details.
Robbery attempt
Two black teen-agers, one armed with a handgun and wearing a mask, barged into a family's home Wednesday night and demanded money. But a resident refused and the suspects fled, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Edna Gooding, who lives in the 300 block of South Audubon Avenue, told officers that one suspect asked to use her phone at about 6:15 p.m. The second suspect the displayed a firearm, forced his way inside and demanded money from her and her daughter, police said.
When the women denied having any, the suspects fled. Both were described only as being about 16 years old.
Three hurt
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $21,770 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, the Highway Patrol reported.
*A driver from Mount Olive was injured and both vehicles were demolished in a collision at 8:38 a.m. Tuesday on Waller Road near Cashwell Hill Road, the Highway Patrol said. Freddie Lee Robinson, 57, of Price Street, Mount Olive, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokesman said. The report said Price was going north and had started a left turn into a dirt path and then his pickup truck was struck by a car that was passing him. Neither Price, nor the other driver, Joyce L. Johnson, 66, of Waller Road, Mount Olive, was charged. The vehicles were valued at $9,200.
*A driver was injured and his car was demolished in a wreck at 3 a.m. Sunday on Genoa Road near Old Mount Olive Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kevin John Matteson Jr., 21, of Fulton Road, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with exceeding a safe speed after his eastbound car ran off the left side in a curve, then came back off the right side out of control, struck a driveway culvert and a ditch. The car was valued at $8,000.
*A driver was injured in a one-vehicle wreck at 8:49 p.m. Saturday on Arrington Bridge Road near Greenfield Cemetery Road, the Highway Patrol said. Mercedes Miguel Felix, 28, of Emmaus Church Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with driving left of center after the van that she was driving ran off the left side and struck a mailbox and a tree. Damages were set at $4,570.
Break-ins
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*About $6,940 worth of property was stolen Wednesday from an apartment in the 600 block of East New Hope Road, police said. The resident, Almir Spahic, reported the theft of gold jewelry and a jewelry box, a laptop computer, a camera, a DVD player and a pet hamster and its cage. No sign of forced entry was listed.
*Jewelry, with a value of $2,400, was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a home in the 500 block of Third Street, police said. The resident, D.E. Teachey, said two gold chains, a watch, two bracelets and two gold and diamond rings were taken. No sign of forced entry was reported.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About $4,064 worth of property was stolen between Jan. 17 and Wednesday from a truck in the 400 block of Connie Circle. The resident, Matthew Pendergraph, reported the theft of 103 compact discs and a gun case, valued at $2,114. Melody Joyce Parker of Goldsboro said her digital camera, worth $1,200 was taken. A two-way radio, owned by the Rosewood Fire Department and valued at $750, also was stolen.
*A digital camera and a battery were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday from a classroom at Spring Creek High School. The owner, Lisa Jones of Dudley, put a $1,050 value on her property.
Drug charges
Three men were arrested Tuesday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad during an investigation on Timothy Street near Dudley.
*Adam Joseph Barfield, 31, of Mobile Circle, Dudley, was charged with felony possession with intent to sell and deliver methamphetamine. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $5,000 secured bond.
*Carlton Dean Odom, 26, of Alpine Lane, Dudley, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. His secured bond was set at $800.
*Bryant Wayne Cansler, 19, of East Main Street, Mount Olive, was held on two outstanding arrest orders. His secured bond was set at $1,100.
Auto larceny
A 44-year-old man was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with felony vehicle larceny.
Billy Ray Thompson of Alert Cable Road, Dudley, was accused of refusing to return a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass after repairing it. The investigating officers, Detective Sgts. Mike Kabler and Carl Lancaster said the car was recovered with parts missing and minor damage. Thompson was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
Car break-in
A teen-ager from Dudley was arrested Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with three felony offenses.
Christopher William Hicks, 17, of Waldrop Road was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was accused of breaking into a vehicle and stealing property, Detective Sgt. Rick Farfour said. Property, valued at $530, has been recovered and returned to its owner. Hicks was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
