Yard sale will raise money for Duplin County kennel

KENANSVILLE -- The Duplin Animal Rescue Team is planning a yard sale to raise money to help renovate a kennel that is being used to hold unwanted animals.
The kennel is at the home of Michael Quinn's home outside Kenansville. Quinn volunteered to allow it to be used to house dogs rescued by the group from the Duplin County Animal Control facility.
But the state Department of Agriculture has ordered that the kennel be improved to meet state standards. Some of the required changes are structural and will be very costly, said Kim Loyd, a spokesman for the group.
She said the group is also trying to establish itself as a non-profit organization. That takes money, too, she said.
The yard sale will be held on Saturday, March 5 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the K-Mart on College Road in Wilmington. People who would like to donate their time or items for sale should contact Jeannie Mintz at 910-458-3266. People who would like to help by sponsoring a yard sale at another location are also invited to call Mintz.
Ms. Mintz has volunteered to head the project to help the organization continue saving dogs and cats from being destroyed. The group takes the animals to Wilmington where they are offered for adoption. Since April, the Duplin group has rescued more than 600 dogs and 200 cats.
"It has been a lot of work and time invested," said Ms. Loyd. "It would be a shame to have to cease our efforts in finding loving homes for these unfortunate companion animals due to us not having a 'sanctioned' facility."
The group's last adoption fair was held last Saturday at Coastal K-9 Bakery on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington. Ms. Loyd said three kittens and seven dogs were adopted. All 10 animals had been rescued from the animal control facility in Kenansville.
She urged people who care about animals to donate items for sale.
"Please look in your attic, your garage, your storage areas and either call to have these items picked up or deliver them to our drop-off point," she said. The drop-off point will be announced soon, she said.
Meanwhile, she said, anybody who wants to help pick up donated items can call Ms. Mintz.
