Check scheme
Four unidentified men were arrested Saturday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with 13 felony counts each of forgery and uttering.
The Hispanic men, who said they lived in Raleigh, were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $65,000 secured bonds.
An employee at the La Palmita Mexican store at 4357 U.S. 117 South told sheriff's deputies that on Friday the men had cashed several checks from Carolina Turkeys. When the men returned Saturday and tried to cash more checks, the employee became suspicious and the men fled in a small white van, reports said.
When sheriff's deputies arrested the suspects Saturday they found several identifications inside the van with different names and addresses but with the same photograph.
A store employee told investigators that the men had cashed 30 counterfeit checks worth $30,000. Thirteen checks were recovered.
Break-in
Thieves pried off steel bars securing a door at a convenience store between Thursday and Friday and then stole $7,619 worth of property and $590 in cash, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The break-in occurred between 10 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday at the Tienda Flores Mexicana on N.C. 55 East near Seven Springs.
An unknown number of phone cards, 10 pairs of cowboy boots and 10 black leather jackets were stolen. Damages were estimated at $2,150.
Accidents
*Four people were injured and both cars were demolished in a collision at 12:15 p.m. Sunday on East Ash Street near North Kornegay Street, Goldsboro police said. Sergio Pacheco Martinez, 27, of Union Grove Church Road, Fremont, and his passengers, Emeterio Pacheco-Martinez, 47, of Union Grove Church Road and Jennifer Collins, 34, of Bobolink Trailer Park, Fremont, and the other driver, Maria Teresa Flores, 17, of Cleveland Drive, Mount Olive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Sergio Pacheco-Martinez was charged with a yield violation, and Ms. Flores was charged with not having an operator's license.
*Three people were injured and both cars were destroyed in a wreck at 11:35 p.m. Saturday at Corporate Drive and the ramp from North William Street to Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass. Joewand Denise Jennings, 29, of Sydney Drive, Dudley, and her passengers, Letarcha McGhee, 31, of Maple Street and Melissa Hines, 37, of Carver Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Jennings was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Damage was estimated at $6,000 to a car in a two-vehicle, hit-and-run accident at 4:54 p.m. Saturday in a parking lot in the 2600 block of Royall Avenue. A driver did not stop at a stop sign and his SUV struck a car driven by Audrey Brian, 75, of Snow Hill.
*A car rolled back into a Goldsboro police car at 11:13 p.m. Sunday at Olivia Lane and Sycamore Street and the driver fled, police said. The car was registered to James William Pearce Jr. of Kinston, the report said.
Man robbed
A man from Pennsylvania was assaulted and had his wallet stolen early Sunday as he dropped off a passenger at Center and Raynor streets. James Lloyd Evans Sr., 47, of McConnellsburg, Pa., told police that the passenger was black, about 40 years old, 5-feet-9 and 210 pounds with a heavy build, black hair and brown eyes. He wore dark pants and a gray hooded jacket.
Police also are investigating these reports:
*A thief broke into a home in the 100 block of Head Street and then stole only a 50-cent soft drink, police said. Damage was estimated at $500.
*A combination video cassette recorder and DVD player and video-game equipment were stolen from a home in the 400 block of Charles Street. The value of the stolen property was set at $309 and damage at $30.
*A telescope, a combination radio and tape player and a video cassette recorder valued at $380 were stolen Saturday from a home in the 300 block of South Jefferson Avenue.
Thefts reported
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*About 50 DVD movies, video-game equipment, a television and a video cassette recorder and DVD player were stolen Friday from a home in the 6200 block of Wayne Memorial Drive. The value of the stolen property was set at $2,300 and damage at $200.
*About 60 DVD movies worth $1,200 and $90 in change were stolen between Dec. 16 and Saturday from a home in the 100 block of Colonel Warrick Drive.
*A Honda Accord valued at $2,500 was stolen between Thursday and Saturday from a home on Timothy Street near Dudley.
