Witness recants
kidnapping story
A 34-year-old woman has recanted her story that she was abducted last weekend by a man from the 100 block of Ellis Drive, a Wayne County Sheriff's official said today.
Grace Hall had told deputies that she had been assaulted and abducted by a man, identified as George Thomas Davis, 28, on Saturday after she had left a car for repairs. She said neighbors tried to stop the abduction but could not and she was kept in a motel overnight.
Ms. Hall, who said she was a former employee of The Doll House on U.S. 70 East, said the man brought her back to Ellis Drive, where she escaped Sunday. The man fled, and, she said, she rode with the neighbors who flagged down a Goldsboro police officer. Sheriff's deputies then were notified from the Police Department, the report said.
Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said assault and kidnapping charges against Davis will be dismissed. He said Ms. Hall would be interviewed again today.
Break-in solved,
property found
Goldsboro Police Officer Stacy Hatcher said she saw a man walking with two large bags at about 3 a.m. Monday near the Wayne County Heath and Social Services department building at 301 N. Herman St.
When Ms. Hatcher investigated, she found that the bags contained snack food, office supplies and a cell phone with WCDSS on it, the report said. Ms. Hatcher then found a broken window in the building and confirmed that the man had broken into three vending machines, filing cabinets and lockers and had stolen the property.
Anthony Leonard White, 36, of Stevens Mill Road was charged with three felony offenses -- breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods -- and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $24,000 secured bond.
The stolen property, valued at about $2,126, was recovered. Damage to the window was estimated at $200.
The arrest enabled police to find about $4,000 worth of property that had been stolen in other break-ins in Goldsboro, Investigator Dale Foster said. The property was recovered from businesses in the city. The thefts remain under investigation. More charges are possible, Foster said.
Drug charges
Three men have been arrested by authorities on multiple felony drug offenses.
*Brian Christopher McCullen, 30, of Earle Mitchell Road, LaGrange, and Tony Merril McCullen, 44, of Dobbersville Road, Mount Olive, were charged last week by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad with trafficking in marijuana by possession and conspiracy to traffic in marijuana. Each man was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. Officers seized 43 pounds of marijuana at the Dobbersville Road house.
*Dexter Jermel Middleton, 23, of Elton Drive was charged Monday by Goldsboro police with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the purpose of keeping and selling marijuana and misdemeanor resisting arrest. He was jailed in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond.
Four hurt
in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $45,700 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $12,000 in a three-vehicle collision at 1:30 p.m. Monday at North George and West Ash streets, Goldsboro police said. Jose Santiago Lopez, 40, of West Hooks River Road was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Another driver, Kadia Tylette Peacock, 31, of Porter Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
The report said Ms. Peacock was making a left turn from George Street and her car collided with Lopez's oncoming, southbound pickup truck. The impact from the collision pushed Lopez's truck into a parked sport utility vehicle, registered to Roland Craig Sutton of Granville Drive.
*A pedestrian crossing Walnut Street was struck by a car turning from Center Street at 2:43 p.m. Monday, police said. Kunie F. Powers, 84, of North Taylor Street was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was listed today in stable condition, a spokeswoman said. The driver, Milford Devon Davis, 30, of Hugh Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Her car was not damaged.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in a two-car, head-on collision at 10:23 p.m. Saturday on Perkins Mill Road near U.S. 70, the Highway Patrol said. Ruth B. Day, 57, of Glenn Drive was released after emergency-room treatment. The other driver, Anthony Alan Cape, 18, of U.S. 13 North, was charged with reckless driving. Troopers said he had left a gas station parking lot in a reckless manner and he lost control of the car after it fish-tailed into the left lane.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 10:55 p.m. Saturday on Adams Road near Camp Jubilee Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Yadelis Seda Otero, 19, of East Maple Street, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The report said the car, valued at $6,800, ran off the right side, struck a ditch and overturned. No one was injured in the accident.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 11:30 p.m. Friday on Tommy's Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Lauren Beth Pfau, 20, of Plantation Place, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Troopers said the car had run off the right side, the driver had overcorrected and the car overturned. The car was valued at $12,300.
*Damages were estimated at $7,400 in a two-car collision at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday on Pikeville-Princeton Road near the Johnston County line, the Highway Patrol said. One motorist, Amy B. Wiley, 32, of Gurley Dairy Road, Pikeville, was charged with improper passing. The other driver, Tawana Letosha Surrett, 27, of Little Dove Road, Pikeville, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Ms. Wiley had started to pass as Ms. Surrett was making a left turn into a driveway.
*A driver was injured and damages were set at $7,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 at N.C. 55 and Indian Springs Road, about a mile east of Mount Olive, the Highway Patrol said. Humberto Alvarez, 31, of Cleveland Drive, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with a yield violation. The report said Alvarez's southbound car collided with an eastbound van driven by John Morris Rose, 33, of John Rose Lane, Mount Olive.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reported thefts:
*A brown, four-door 1988 Lincoln Town Car was stolen between Jan. 3 and Monday from the 1800 block of N.C. 222 East, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Greg Maylon Reid of Fremont, put a $1,000 value on the disabled car.
*A miter saw, a welder and a socket set were stolen between Wednesday and Monday from a work van in the 200 block of Mill Run Place, deputies said. The owner and resident, Julius David Capps Sr., said his tools were worth $1,000.
