Downtown group to get two awards

The Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. will receive two awards this month from the state's Main Street Awards Program.
Awards for the development group include special recognition for its sponsorship campaign and for the renovations of Weslyan College.
Main Street is a national program that promotes downtown revitalization and historic preservation in smaller towns. North Carolina became a Main Street state in 1980 and Goldsboro became a Main Street community in the late 1980s. Public and private investment in the state's Main Street communities has grown to a total of $700 million.
The Main Street conference will be held Jan. 26-28 in New Bern and will include three days of sessions on topics including preservation partnerships, tax credits, promotions, streetscapes, and preserving community character.
Speakers for this year's event will include Charleston, S.C., Mayor Joseph P. Riley, and Rodney Swink, director of the N.C. Office of Urban Development.
