Robbery charge
A 20-year-old man was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with the assault and armed robbery of a 61-year-old Dudley man.
Ricky Allen Ballance Jr. of Paradise Lane, Dudley, was accused of Thursday's crimes, Detective Sgt. Mike Kabler said.
The victim, John Edsel Rhodes of Mobile Circle, told deputies that two men asked him if he wanted to buy drugs. When he declined, they assaulted him and stole his car keys, the report said. Rhodes was injured and needed medical treatment, detectives said.
Ballance was charged with felony armed robbery and felony assault with a deadly weapon. Ballance was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 secured bond. More charges are possible, detectives said. Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris assisted in the case.
Four charges
A 35-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police and charged with four felony offenses in two break-ins.
Joseph Harold Battle Jr. of Wayne Avenue was accused of breaking into Wilbert Way's vehicle in July and stealing a casket-lowering device, Investigator K.S. Harris said. Battle also was accused of breaking into Goldsboro Van and Storage Co. in December and stealing a checkbook.
Battle was charged with two counts each of breaking and entering and larceny. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $15,000 secured bond. Investigator Mike Moore assisted in the case.
Home break-ins
A shotgun, a rifle, a pearl necklace, high school and college class rings and video-game equipment were stolen Wednesday from a home in the 700 block of Dollard Town Road, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
The thief had cut the phone lines and damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The resident, W. Grant Webber Jr., estimated the value of the stolen property at $2,575 and set damage at $800.
Sheriff's deputies also are investigating these matters:
*Video-game equipment was stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Shady Creek Road, deputies said. The resident, David H. Pate, estimated the stolen property's value at $199 and damage at $40.
*A DVD player was stolen Wednesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Brenn Loop Drive, deputies said. The resident, Bobby Ray Whitfield, said the player was worth $110 and set damage at $30.
Weapons theft
Four rifles, a shotgun and a .44 caliber handgun were stolen between June 28 and Wednesday from a home in the 200 block of Hilda Place, Goldsboro police said.
The resident, Joyce Baker, put a $1,900 value on the firearms. A .22 caliber rifle, valued at $200, also was stolen but was recovered. No sign of forced entry was reported.
Driver injured
A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were estimated at $8,500 in a three-vehicle collision at 5:42 p.m. Wednesday at East Mulberry and North Lionel streets, Goldsboro police said. Mary D. Johnstone, 83, of West Mulberry Street was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was listed today in stable condition, a spokeswoman said.
A northbound driver, Mack H. Privott, 72, of Salem Church Road, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Ms. Johnstone was going west. The impact of the collision pushed Privott's pickup into a stopped, southbound van driven by Phyllis H. Johnson, 40, of Plantation Road.
Fraud
A teen-ager was arrested Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and charged with two felony fraud offenses.
Justin Brian Flowers, 17, of Thigpen Dairy Road, Mount Olive, was charged with forgery and uttering. He was accused of passing a forged check Oct. 26 at the Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Mount Olive, Detective Sgt. Mike Kabler said. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
