A Wayne County man has been indicted on an armed robbery charge, and another man has been indicted on 14 sex offenses.

The Wayne County Grand Jury returned true bills of indictment against 51 other defendants during its monthly meeting.

Mark Albin Simpson, 34, of Holland Hill Drive was indicted on a charge of armed robbery on June 30. He was accused of threatening a woman with a beer bottle and then stealing $175 from her. He was arrested July 3.

Simpson also was indicted on a charge of larceny. He was accused of stealing $230 from another woman on Sept. 30.

Angelo Applewhite, 43, of Red Hill Road, Fremont, was indicted on 14 sexual offenses -- three counts each of incest, indecent liberties with a child and a lewd and lascivious act; two counts each of a first-degree statutory sex offense and statutory rape of a 13-year-old, and one count of a first-degree statutory rape.

The alleged crimes occurred after Sept. 1, 1998. Applewhite was not arrested until March 31 after Wayne County sheriff's detectives received information from the county Department of Social Services that a young girl had been sexually assaulted repeatedly.

The grand jury also handed up 36 true bills of indictment on felony drug charges, eight for such property crimes as breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods and two for firearms violations.

Five people were indicted as habitual felons. If a defendant is convicted of a fourth, non-overlapping crime, he could be sentenced to a significantly longer term. The grand jurors could not act on 11 bills of indictment, because witnesses were not present.
