Black History events
The Wayne County Museum and the Community Affairs Office are still accepting artifacts, photographs and anything pertaining to Wayne County black history or black history overall. The museum will use the items in an exhibit in January.
There will be a reception open to the public on Jan. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the museum to unveil the exhibit.
The Wayne County Historical Association and the Martin Luther King holiday committee are working on the exhibit. They are also looking for photographs of black-owned businesses or some of the old neighborhoods years ago to use in the exhibit.
Anyone who has these items or for more information should call LaTerrie Ward at the Community Affairs Office at 580-4359. The museum is located at 116 N. William St. in Goldsboro. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment.
Also, a play called "A Rumble in My Voice" will be held Sunday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Paramount Theater. The play is a musical drama that pays tribute to 12 black women who were influential in the civil rights movement. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets should call Ms. Ward.
There will be a breakfast on Jan. 17 at 9 a.m. at H.V. Brown Hall on Poplar St. in Goldsboro. It is open to the public. For more information call Ms. Ward.
Unemployment rates
The unemployment rate rose in Wayne County in November.
Around 2,278 county residents, or about 4.5 percent of the workforce, were unemployed, according to the Employment Security Commission.
That's an increase of about 93 people from October, when the county's unemployment rate was 4.3 percent.
The statewide rate in November was 5 percent, which was up from 4.6 percent.
The unemployment rate in surrounding counties was Duplin, 5.2 percent in October compared to 5.6 percent in November; Johnston, 3.3 to 3.6 percent; Sampson, 4.7 to 4.9 percent; Lenoir, 4.4 to 4.7 percent; and Wilson, 7.6 to 8.6 percent.
Auditions for play
Center Stage Theatre will hold auditions -- ages 16 and up -- for the play "The Man Who Came to Dinner" Tuesday through Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Herman Park Center. Production dates are Feb. 16-18. For more information call Sandra at 738-3077.
Federal funds available
Wayne County has received $50,876 in federal funds under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's emergency food and shelter program.
These funds will be distributed among local agencies. To qualify, an agency must be a local government or private voluntary nonprofit (501 C-3) organization, have a financial audit and a nondiscrimination policy, demonstrate the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs and have a voluntary board if a private voluntary group.
Funding will be awarded as supplements to current services. Applications will be available Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the United Way of Wayne County office, 308 N. William St. They must be turned back to United Way no later than Jan. 21 at noon.
In order to be eligible for funding consideration, applicants must attend a meeting of the local Emergency Food and Shelter Board Jan. 26 at 9 a.m. at the United Way office.
