Accidents abound
on icy roads
Many people who got out on Wayne County roads Sunday ended up off them. The area's first snow and ice storm created plenty of work for auto body shops.
The Goldsboro Police Department responded to at least nine accidents Sunday, none of which had serious injuries. Damages were estimated at nearly $35,000.
An icy patch on U.S. 117 at U.S. 70 caused a four-car pileup around 5:40 p.m. One car ran off the road and hit a guardrail, and the other drivers, none of whom was going more than 30 miles per hour, were unable to stop. All four vehicles had $2,000-$4,000 in damage.
Michael Wayne Anglin II, 21, of Cashwell Drive and David Walter Panowicz, 24, of Hillcrest Drive, were each charged with exceeding a safe speed.
Other reports included:
*Rosendo Marquez Dyando, 24, of Havelock, lost control of a 1993 Pontiac on U.S. 70 , near William Street, at noon. His vehicle ran into a ditch but had little damage. He was charged with no driver's license and exceeding a safe speed.
*A 2004 Ford driven by Christopher Thomas Bartlett was sideswiped on U.S. 70 at 1 p.m. his car had $1,800 in damage. The other driver left before police showed up.
*A 1995 Dodge rear-ended a 2004 Nissan on William Street around 4 p.m., causing a total of $2,500 in damage. Both drivers -- Spanky Ray Wilson, 24, of Genoa Road, and Cynthia Mujrrill Files, 51, of Warsaw -- were charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*Shortly before 6 p.m., a 1998 Ford, driven by Quwanda Lafaye Ellison, sideswiped a 2001 Nissan on U.S. 117. Ryan Alan Foster, 24, of Boling Drive, lost control of the Nissan, which rammed into the guardrail and sustained $1,100 in damage. Ms. Ellison, 22, of Ponderosa Drive, LaGrange, was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*Lacey Ann Brown, 23, of Fedelon Trail, lost control of a 2002 Ford near her home at 6:25 p.m. and ran off the road. After the vehicle struck a ditch, it flipped once and landed on its passenger side. It had $5,000 in damage.
*On U.S. 70 at 7:30 p.m., Celia Hernandez Esquivel, 32, of Hobby Horse Drive, Seven Springs, ran a 1996 Pontiac into the back of a 2003 Dodge, driven by Thomas Lee Snell, 21, of Spring Creek Road. She was charged with exceeding a safe speed and no driver's license.
*Juan Vela Morva, 43, of Falling Creek Church Road, was driving a 1989 Ford around 10 mph down Royall Avenue at 9:15 p.m. Sunday when he lost control and slid off the road. His vehicle had $500 in damage. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
*Derek Juanzel Dixon, 16, of Skitt Drive, was unable to stop his 2000 Nissan at the intersection of Herman and Elm streets at 11:50 p.m. and struck a 2002 Acura, driven by Tommel Devon Hayes, 27, of Eason Street. Both vehicles had $3,000-$4,000 in damage. Dixon was charged with no driver's license and failure to stop at a stop sign.
Store robbed
Five men attempted to rob a Dudley-area store Sunday afternoon but escaped only with food, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
Around 3:20 p.m., four suspects entered the Paflue Mini-Store on Potts Road. A fifth person entered the store and pointed a toy gun at a store employee, demanding money.
The employee grabbed the toy away from the suspect, and all five suspects grabbed food items and fled on foot. The missing goods include three bowls of beef soup mix, six packs of noodles, and six bags of sugar.
The suspects were all described as black males in their early 20s. No arrests were reported.
Drug charges
A Crime Stoppers tip led to the arrest of a Goldsboro man on a variety of drug charges.
The Goldsboro-Wayne Drug Squad arrested Douglas Andrew Best, 44, of Old Smithfield Road, Saturday. The squad had received information that Best was at a location on U.S. 13 South and had outstanding warrants.
Best was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver methaphetamine and possession with intent to sell and deliver NDMA (ecstasy).
He was also served with outstanding warrants for a probation violation and from the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Bond was set at $40,000.
The arresting officers were Wayne County deputies Aaron Cantwell, Kenneth Grice, Jayson Hill and C.T. Arnold.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A break-in was reported Sunday by Michelle Hines at her home in the 1400 block of South John Street. A TV and DVD player were stolen.
*Someone shot out windows of a car parked in the 700 block of Franklin Street. Shirley Britt reported the damage Saturday.
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is investigating these reports:
*At least one gunshot hit an occupied home in the 1300 block of Capps Bridge Road Sunday. Jonathan Granville Rowe reported the damage at 10:45 a.m.
*A break-in was reported Sunday at Lee Edward Gebhart's home in the 900 block of U.S. 13 South. Missing property includes two rifles, a shotgun, two pistols, a TV and a DVD player.
