Burglars strike
homes in Dudley
Burglars barged into two homes near Dudley, causing damage, but no property was stolen because alarms may have been activated at both homes, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office reported.
A family in the 100 block of Pearl Street said three intruders forced open their front door before dawn today and yelled, "Police, police!" They tried to tie up the man, but they fled when they thought that they had heard an alarm.
The suspects were described only as being black men who wore black toboggans, black masks and black pants and fled in a small car.
Damage was estimated at $100 at the Alejandre S. Greenfield home.
Early Saturday, intruders blew open a door at a home on Timber Hollow Drive, reports said. The alarm company then called the residents and one screamed that someone had used a machine gun. The victims then heard more gunshots and hid in a closet or a bedroom, deputies said.
Sheriff Carey Winders and deputies responded to the home of Nikia Maye and Brian Barnes, but the residents could not describe the intruders or their getaway car. Damage was set at $450.
Meanwhile, gunshots were fired into a home on Kornegay Drive between Saturday and Sunday, deputies said. The suspect drove a small car and fled. Damage to a window and the walls at the Brenda Garner home was put at $300.
Driver is injured,
airlifted to Pitt
A driver was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville on Sunday night after a two-car collision on Dr. M.L. King Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, near North Spence Avenue, a Goldsboro police report said.
Bryan Kristopher Diez, 26, of Raleigh was listed today in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Diez also was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired and reckless driving.
The other driver, Danny Carroll Thompson, 49, and his passenger, Nannette Kearney Leroy, 44, both of Nor-Am Road, Pikeville, were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Both cars were demolished. Diez' 2004 Ford was valued at $15,000, and Ms. Leroy's 1994 Acura was valued at $8,000, the report said.
Police said Diez was leaving the exit ramp, lost control of his car, overcorrected the steering and spun into the westbound auto driven by Thompson.
In other collisions:
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $5,500 in a two-car crash at 4 p.m. Sunday on South Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 117 bypass, and the entrance to Elmwood Cemetery, police said. Jesse James Harper, 63, of Brogden Street, Dudley, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He also was charged with a yield violation. The other motorist was listed as Gamaliel Salas, 28, of J.C. Price Drive, Seven Springs.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-car collision at 10:48 a.m. Saturday at North William and 11th streets, police said. One driver, Tiffany Brooke Capps, 20, of Edmundson Street, Pikeville, the other motorist, Shelia Rena Stephens, 38, of North Randolph Street, and a passenger, Antonio Carmon, 24, of New Hope Road, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Capps, who was making a left turn, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Damages were set at $6,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 7:12 p.m. Saturday on North Berkeley Boulevard near Cashwell Drive, police said. One driver, Christopher John Sanders, 21, of Timberline Oak Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The other motorist was identified as Jana Marie Petticoffer, 24, of Beam Street.
*A passenger was injured and damages were put at $5,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 3 p.m. Friday at Cashwell and Eastgate drives, police said. Delia Epifania Vindel, 34, of Durham Lake Road, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. She was riding with an eastbound driver, Jesus Antonio Cruz, 31, of Durham Lake Drive, Dudley. A northbound driver, Roy Addison Simmons Jr., 24, of Maple Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Two people were injured in a two-car collision at 5:43 p.m. Friday at Royall Avenue and Sunburst Drive, police said. One driver, Mario Navarro Recarte, 23, of Central Heights Road, left Wayne Memorial Hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. A passenger in the other car, Donald James Kennedy, 17, of Croom Drive, was released after emergency-room treatment. Kennedy's driver, Stacy Lynne Garner, 16, of Gainey Drive, was charged with a stop-sign violation. Damages were fixed at $600.

victim of break-in
The home of Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy C.T. Arnold on Pleasant Pines Drive was broken into between Thursday and Friday, according to reports.
A dryer, a refrigerator and a washer with a combined value of $1,200 were stolen. The thief had damaged a door and a wall in order to steal the appliances. Damage was estimated at $400.
Presents stolen
The thief who broke into a home in the 200 block of Mills Road between Thursday and Saturday might have been called the Grinch who stole Christmas.
The resident, Steven Wayne Lilly, told Wayne County sheriff's deputies that $800 worth of Christmas presents were stolen after a door was pried open to his home.
A television, 40 DVD movies, two DVD players, a video camera, a microwave oven and a stereo also were stolen. These items were valued at $2,060. Damage was set at $200.
Robbery charge
A Mount Olive teen-ager was arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with armed robbery and a firearms violation.
Joshua Earl Davis, 17, of South Center Street was accused of robbing Michael Hyland at gunpoint earlier Saturday in the 1900 block of North William Street, Investigator Trey Ball said.
When Hyland returned to his truck at about 2:35 a.m., he told police that a black man had displayed a handgun and demanded his money. The suspect also told Hyland that someone had broken into his truck. The robber took Hyland's wallet with $50 and personal papers and a cell phone. Hyland called police from a nearby phone.
Someone had smashed a window in Hyland's truck and had stolen a compact disc player, a speaker and an amplifier. The stolen property was valued at $1,005. Damage was estimated at $100.
Davis also was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and resisting arrest. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $76,000 secured bond. Officers Bobby Smith and Mark Taylor assisted in the arrest and investigation.
Meth charges
A Goldsboro woman was arrested Friday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with operating a methamphetamine operation in her home on Rosewood Road.
Linda T. Hawley, 42, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling the drug. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Her daughter, Christy N. Hawley, 19, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. Her bond was set at $500.
Linda Hawley's arrest was the fourth last week by the drug squad for methamphetamine charges. Officers and the District Attorney's Office said Ms. Hawley and the other defendants will be prosecuted under the new, stronger meth law that went into effect Dec. 1.
Drug charges
Three people were arrested Saturday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Joyce McLamb, 42, of Fayetteville was charged with possession of heroin and two misdemeanors, possession of drug paraphernalia and shoplifting. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $6,000 bond.
*Montay Lashay Exum, 19, of Newsome Street and Richard Gaston, 18, of Olivia Lane were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana at Courtyard Circle and South Slocumb Street. Each was jailed in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond.
Break-ins
An estimated $6,800 worth of property was stolen between Nov. 27 and Friday from a rental home in the 400 block of Beechwood Drive, according to reports filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
The stolen property included a refrigerator, a stove, a dishwasher, a microwave oven, a ceiling fan, a decorative fountain, shelves, a garden archway and fences. The property is owned by Stewart Balczon.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*Two handguns, a holster, ammunition and a pellet gun were stolen between Thursday and Friday after a window was smashed in a truck in the 200 block of Doug Drive, deputies said. The owner and resident, James Thomas Laws Jr., estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,670 and damage at $50.
*When a resident went to his car Sunday, he discovered that all four tires and rims were missing, deputies said. John James Kelly of Lancaster Road said the property was worth $3,000.
*A handgun and three checkbooks were stolen Sunday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1000 block of Genoa Road, deputies said. The resident, Ronnie Eugene Person, put a $184 value on his property and set damage at $25.
*A compact disc player and a set of lights were stolen between Friday and Saturday after a car window was smashed in the 100 block of Sleepy Creek Road, deputies said. The resident, Sadi Fredi Vasquez, estimated the property's value at $150 and damage at $150.
*A 2002 Suzuki motorcycle, two motorcycle helmets and a diamond ring were stolen between Wednesday and Saturday from the 100 block of Ewing Drive, deputies said. The resident, James Patrick Griffin, estimated the property's value at $6,800.
*A video camera, a cellular phone, video-game equipment, a camera, six DVDs and $106 were stolen between Dec. 11 and Friday, deputies said. The resident, Thomas William Sweeney Sr., put a $1,280 value on his property.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*A television, a clock radio and a DVD player were stolen Saturday after a window was damaged at a home in the 300 block of Seymour Drive, police said. The resident, Anastasios Reid, estimated the stolen property's value at $516 and damage at $25.
*A bank bag from the Spence Market at 900 N. Spence Ave. was stolen Friday from an employee, police said. Charleen Allen said she had put the bag in her car, went back inside, returned to her car and opened the door and a black man grabbed the bag with an unknown amount of cash and fled.
*Nine diamond rings, children's clothes, a DVD player and $110 were stolen Friday after a door was forced open at a home in the 300 block of Nelson Drive, police said. The resident, Brenda Bowden, put a $2,475 value on the property.
*A compact disc player was stolen between Wednesday and Friday after a car window was smashed at United Auto Brokers at 1903 N. Berkeley Blvd., police said. The player was worth $130. Damage was put at $50.
Six charges
A 51-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Friday by Goldsboro police and charged with six felony offenses in connection with a break-in at the Disciple House of Prayer.
Henry Dedrick Morris, who did not disclose a home address, was charged with two counts each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
Missing
A 14-year-old Goldsboro girl has been reported missing by relatives to Goldsboro police. Nykea Shanquel Simmons of 610 W. Walnut St. was described as black, 5-feet-4 and 110 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a brown complexion.
When she was seen last at 7:20 a.m. Thursday, she was wearing a light blue shirt, blue jeans, white tennis shoes and a black coat. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police at 705-6572.
