Students fighting
MOUNT OLIVE -- Several Southern Academy students have been charged in juvenile petitions for fighting this week, a Wayne County sheriff's official said today.
Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Keith Hartzog, an officer at the school, was assaulted Tuesday during one incident.
Sheriff's Capt. Joe Allen, who supervises the school resource officers, said a student was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest as a result. She was placed in custody at the Pitt County Juvenile Detention Center in Greenville.
About six students were charged Wednesday with fighting on a school bus on Ruskin Road, Allen said.
The students were believed to be juveniles and were not identified because of their ages, Allen said. But he said he had not seen reports of the two cases.
Burglary thwarted, deputy says
A Wayne County sheriff's deputy says he caught a man breaking into an auto repair shop.
Responding to a 911 call Thursday, Deputy Aaron Cantwell saw a man climbing into a side window at Pro Auto Detail at 2036 U.S. 117 South.
The owner, Jeff Todd Cook, also has a home in the same building and had called county dispatchers to report the intruder. Cook said the man had entered through a side door to go into the office and then had gone outside, the deputy reported.
Cantwell arrived in time to arrest Justin David Davis, 19, of Winston Drive and charge him with felony first-degree burglary. Davis, a former employee at the shop, was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Nothing was reported stolen or damaged at the business.
False report
A 23-year-old Goldsboro man was charged Thursday with making a false report about two stolen couches.
Demetrius Pearsall had said the couches were stolen Tuesday during a break-in at his home on Fairview Circle.
But Goldsboro police Officer Thomas Collins said his investigation revealed that Pearsall had pawned the couches.
Pearsall also was charged with fraudulent disposal of mortgaged property. He was released from custody on a $1,000 unsecured bond.
Drug charges
Two people were arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and charged with felony drug offenses.
Leah Denise Graham, 32, of Everittsville Road, Dudley, and Cornelius Wayne Smith, 20, of Louisville Road were charged with possession with intent to sell cocaine, conspiracy to sell and deliver cocaine and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 secured bond.
Three hurt in wrecks
Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured in a collision at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Pinewood Square parking lot, Goldsboro police said. Beatrice H. Mathis, 53, of Luther Drive was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Kathryn A. Weil, 56, of Beech Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation after backing into Ms. Mathis' car. Damages were set at $1,100.
*Two passengers were injured and damages were estimated at $5,400 in a two-vehicle crash at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. 117 and U.S. 117 Alternate, the Highway Patrol said. Vassie Beamon, 87, of Preacher Henry Road, Faison, and Alma Darden, 65, of Flowers Road, Mount Olive, were released after emergency-room treatment. They were riding with Johnson Lee Sampson Jr., 60, of Woodridge Drive, Mount Olive. The driver of a tractor-trailer, Charles Kenneth Stahl Jr., 49, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with a stop-sign violation. The westbound rig collided with Sampson's southbound car, the report said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Stereo equipment was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a car in an apartment parking lot in the 1600 block of Cuyler Best Road, Goldsboro police said. The thief had damaged a door lock to get inside. The owner and resident, Henry Lee Solomon Jr., said his property was worth $500. Damage was estimated at $200.
*Two speakers and an amplifier were stolen between Tuesday and Wednesday after a car window was broken at Bradley's Automotive at 3647 N.C. 55 East, Seven Springs, sheriff's deputies said. The property was valued at $600. No damage estimate was listed.
