Resident injured
in kitchen fire
A resident suffered smoke inhalation Wednesday during a kitchen fire at 1032-A Lincoln Drive, fire officials said.
Dodress Holder was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where she was treated and released, a spokeswoman said.
Unattended cooking was blamed, Fire Lt. Richard Walker said. Damage was estimated at $500.
Thirteen firefighters answered the 6:15 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder and a command car. They needed about 30 minutes to ventilate the apartment and investigate the cause. Two emergency medical technicians assisted.
Meanwhile, 13 firefighters also answered a call at 11:08 a.m. Wednesday with three engines, a ladder and a command car for a heater malfunction at 309 1/2 S. Virginia St. No fire was found, but firefighters had to go under the home to shut off the fuel.
House fire
Unattended cooking has been blamed for a kitchen fire that resulted in an estimated $25,000 in damages to a home at 479 Mark Edwards Road, according to a fire report.
The home, valued at $120,000, is owned by Roland Gray, the father of New Hope Fire Chief Roland "Bud" Gray.
"He was asleep in the den," said the chief, who lives nearby. "My wife went over, woke him up and got him out. We have a lot to be thankful for."
No injuries were reported.
Eighteen New Hope firefighters answered the 5:38 p.m. alarm Dec. 9 with four trucks. The fire was controlled in about 15 minutes. They needed about another hour to investigate the cause and finish salvage work. Pinewood volunteers offered mutual aid.
The contents in the 1,800-square-foot home were valued at $50,000. Damage was estimated at $20,000 to the home and $5,000 to contents.
Vehicle found
A vehicle was found Wednesday partly submerged in the Neuse River at the Ferry Bridge Road boat ramp.
After Wayne County sheriff's deputies checked the registration, they discovered that the white, two-door 1981 Chevrolet Deluxe truck had been reported stolen in Johnston County.
The truck, valued at $3,000, had minor damage, the report said. It was registered to Norwood Mark Holland of Rains Mill Road, Princeton. The truck was pulled from the water and stored at a Goldsboro wrecker company. The key had been left in the truck, the report said.
Pharmacy break-in
An estimated $1,955 worth of prescription drugs was stolen before dawn today from Southeast Family Pharmacy at 223 N.C. 111 South, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The thief had smashed a window at about 2:40 a.m. in order to get inside. Police answered the alarm and found the break-in. Oxy-Contin and hydrocodone was reported stolen.
Drug charges
Two Goldsboro teen-agers were arrested Wednesday by Goldsboro police at South Slocumb and East Elm streets and charged with a felony drug offense.
Decondros Lee McLean, 18, of South Slocumb Street and Lindsay William Young, 16, of Bryant Street were charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $25,000 secured bond.
Four hurt in wrecks
Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $26,660 in seven recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver was charged with failure to reduce speed after a three-vehicle, chain-reaction collision at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday on New Hope Road near Vinwood Avenue, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Adrienne Miguel Battle, 17, of Shadywood Drive was going east, and the sport utility vehicle that he was driving struck the rear of a minivan driven by Charlotte Elizabeth Edwards, 26, of Central Heights Road. The impact forced the minivan into a SUV driven by Allan Scott Warden, 16, of South Spence Avenue. Damages were set at $4,700.
*A car was demolished in a wreck at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday on Charlie Braswell Road near Ebenezer Church Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Kathryn Sue Dunham, 17, of Braswell Circle, was neither injured nor charged. The report said she had swerved to the left to avoid a box in the road and lost control of the car, and it ran off the right side and struck a mailbox, a telephone pole and a tree. Damages were estimated at $5,900.
*A pedestrian was struck by a car at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday as he stood in the turn lane of New Hope Road at Eastern Wayne High School, the Highway Patrol said. Justin Wade Parrish, 15, of New Hope Road was taken to a clinic for treatment, the report said. The driver who was leaving the school parking lot, Quantina Tameira Harper, 21, of Roberts Drive, LaGrange, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damage was put at $600 to her car.
*A passenger from Wilson was injured in a two-car collision at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 13 near U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. Warren Braswell, 10, was released after emergency-room treatment. His driver, Joshua Terrel Williams, 16, of Potts Road, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Williams was making a left turn and the car that he was driving collided with an oncoming, southbound auto driven by Christopher Edward Ward, 23, of Mobile Circle, Dudley. Damages were set at $4,500.
*Damages were estimated at $5,300 in a two-car crash at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday at N.C. 111 and Bill Lane Boulevard, or N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Rickie Clark Purnell Jr., 19, of Pine Hill Road, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Troopers said Purnell was making a left turn and his car collided with an oncoming, southbound auto driven by John William Howard, 75, of Pink Hill.
*A driver was injured in a one-car crash at 9:13 p.m. Monday on Dobbersville Road near U.S. 13, the Highway Patrol said. Patricia Ann Crawford, 37, of Dobbersville Road, Mount Olive, was treated, admitted and released from the hospital. She also was charged with suspicion of driving while impaired after her car ran off the right side in a sharp curve, came back across the road out of control and struck a mailbox and a ditch. Damages were fixed at $3,560.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle wreck at 8:49 a.m. Monday on Indian Springs Road near N.C. 111, the Highway Patrol said. Bruce Mallam, 56, of Camp Jubilee Road, Seven Springs, was released after emergency-room treatment. He was riding with Jackie Mallam, 43, of Camp Jubilee Road, Seven Springs. The other motorist, Willie Ed King, 42, of Pollocksville, was charged with improper passing. King, driving a tractor-trailer for Guy Shavender Trucking Co. of Pantego, tried to pass another vehicle and the big rig collided with Ms. Mallam's oncoming car. Damages were set at $2,100.
