Brad Renfroe, in charge of making sure the hospital equipment runs smoothly, has been named manager of the year by a state group.

The certified biomedical equipment technician is manager of the clinical engineering department at the hospital. He oversees four other technicians in the care and repair of medical devices, such as ventilators and heart monitors.

The Goldsboro native worked in the electronics field in local industry before joining Wayne Memorial in 1991. He became manager of his department eight years ago.

The award, presented by N.C. Biomedical Association, a state group with 450 members, is presented annually.

Renfroe said the award, presented in Pinehurst last week, came as a surprise. It was such a secret, he said, that his wife, Gina, wasn't even told.

He was nominated for the honor by his supervisor, Steve Herron, director of facility services.

Herron cited Renfroe's professionalism, eye for detail and community efforts with the hospital foundation's golf tournament and involvement in Relay for Life. He said Renfroe had been a good team leader, working with others to make sure they received the training and tools to do their jobs.

"He has also done some things in the department that couldn't have been done without him," Herron said.
