Gift given in gratitude for fund's impact

Empty Stocking Fund volunteers don't do what they do for recognition -- but it is nice when it comes with a $1,000 donation.
Fred Thigpen, a native of Wayne County and a lawyer with offices in Moore and Montgomery counties, sent a $1,000 check with a letter stating the gift is in honor of the News-Argus accounting staff.
It is Thigpen's third annual contribution. He brought the first one to the News-Argus personally. Since the donation was so generous, a staff member insisted that a photograph be taken of Thigpen presenting the check to Deborah White of the accounting department.
Thigpen's letter is addressed to Ms. White, and it states, "Enclosed is my contribution for 2004 and I give it in honor of you and the accounting staff for the wonderful job you all do. Also for the magic of Christmas you bring with a smile to so many young children. You are truly the ones who show us the true meaning of Christmas."
You, too, can share in the true meaning of Christmas by sending a donation to help meet this year's goal of $33,000.
The money will buy gifts and treats for 610 needy children who have been invited to the annual party on Saturday.
