Council approves plans for four new stores

Four new stores, including T.J. Maxx and Circuit City, are coming to Goldsboro, according to City Manager Richard Slozak.
Slozak said the other two stores are Ross's and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
Though there are still some details to be worked out, the Goldsboro City Council approved a site plan Monday for the "Berkeley Commons Shopping Center."
The new shopping center will be built on the west side of North Berkeley Boulevard between Parkway Drive and Hill Drive Circle, across from Lowe's Home Improvement Store.
The 21-acre site was rezoned from residential and general business to shopping center earlier this year.
Two apartment buildings now occupying the site will be torn down.
There are two additional parcels, containing 7,000 square feet and 10,000 square feet, which have been reserved on the northern and southern ends of the shopping center.
It's not known yet what will go on those lots.
The state Transportation Department is requiring that an additional travel lane be built on the west side of Berkeley Boulevard. In addition to the new travel lane, there will also be a traffic island built on Berkeley Boulevard.
Randy Guthrie, the city's planning director, said the state was planning to widen Berkeley Boulevard within the next few years. Guthrie said that the development company and the state were still discussing who should pay for the new traffic lane.
The city won't issue a certificate of occupancy until the traffic lane is built. The developer is also required to build sidewalks in front of the shopping center along Berkeley Boulevard.
