City extends Slozak's contract

The Goldsboro City Council decided Monday to keep Richard Slozak around for at least another month.
Slozak, the city manager, will retire Dec. 28 after working for the city for more than 30 years. He will stay on as an interim city manager until the end of January, while the council completes its search for a new manager.
Slozak will be paid $12,000, whether he serves the entire month or not. In addition, the council could ask him to stay for an additional month at a rate of $3,000 per week.
Slozak will not receive retirement, medical insurance, vacation or sick leave for the additional month he works for the city.
The council began its search for a new manager last summer when it hired the Mercer Group to conduct a nationwide search for the position.
Eighty-seven people applied for the job, but the Mercer Group picked 13 of the best applicants for the council to consider.
After reviewing the 13 applications, the council decided to interview five of the candidates.
Negotiations are under way for the city manager, but the process is taking a little longer because of the holiday season and notice that a prospective manager must give to his current employer.
The city hopes that the new manager will be in place before the end of January.
