Two people shot
Two men were shot in separate assaults, according to Goldsboro police reports.
Eddie Louis Carraway, 50, of Effingham, S.C., was wounded at about 1 this morning at the Wayne Motel at 801 W. Grantham St., police said.
Carroway reported that someone knocked on his motel-room door and asked to use the phone. When Carroway refused, the suspect said he would shoot Carroway, the report said. The suspect then displayed a small handgun, shot Carroway in the stomach and fled, police said.
Carroway was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was listed today in stable condition, a spokeswoman said.
The shooter was described as being black, about 20 years old, 5-feet-8 and 135 pounds with a thin build and black hair. He was accompanied by two other black men.
John D. Goodman, 19, of Mount Olive was wounded Tuesday at about 6 p.m. as he was driving a westbound car on Olivia Lane, police said. The gunshot shattered the driver's side window.
Goodman was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for an arm wound and released. Two others in the car were not injured.
The car, owned by Julie Ann Hirschy of Pikeville, sustained $100 in damages.

Clerks foil holdups
Two clerks at convenience stores foiled armed robberies Tuesday night by refusing to give the would-be robbers cash, according to Goldsboro police reports.
A clerk at the Kangaroo gas station at 901 W. Grantham St. told police that a black man brandished a pistol at 11:30 p.m. and demanded cash. The clerk refused. She told him he was being videotaped, the report said.
The man then fled with another black man who did not enter the store. Neither man was described further.
Earlier, a clerk at the Spur gas station at 2000 N. William St. reported that at 9:15 p.m. a black man asked for change from her for a $5 bill. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man tried to grab the cash, but the clerk stopped him, police said.
The man then said he would shoot the clerk, but the clerk continued to keep him from taking the money and the robber fled, the report said.
The would-be robber wore a gray and black jacket and blue jeans.
$11,000 scam
A woman gave a man $11,000 on Oct. 20 to buy a mobile home, but she discovered the man did not have the authority to sell the home, a Goldsboro police report said.
Michaela Perez Morales of West Lockhaven Drive saw the home at Endicott Homes at 115 E. N.C. 403, Mount Olive, the report said. Later when the bogus salesman came to her home, she gave him the money.
When she asked Tuesday why she had not received the home, she was told the man was not a salesman, the report said.
Six-vehicle wreck
Two drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $29,600 in a six-vehicle collision Tuesday on a bridge on Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, the U.S. 70 bypass, Goldsboro police reported.
The drivers, Denio Ray Edwards, 42, of North William Street, and Hansel Monzale Bridges, 27, of East Hillsboro Street, Mount Olive, were treated for minor injuries and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Edwards, Bridges and a third motorist, Joseph Shannon Thornton, 45, of Stevens Mill Road, were charged with failure to reduce speed after the chain-reaction, rear-end collision at 1:04 p.m. Edwards also was charged with driving while his license was revoked.
The other drivers were identified as Nathan Antonio Williams, 45, of Nottingham Drive; Michael Douglas Stewart, 45, of Lynch Drive, and Vera Bess King, 65, of Suttontown Road, Faison.
In other collisions:
*Damages were estimated at $12,000 in a two-truck crash at 7:56 a.m. Tuesday at North Berkeley Boulevard and a ramp to Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway, police said. A man driving a southbound pickup, Carlton Ray Edmundson, 75, of West Hill Street, was charged with a stoplight violation. The eastbound motorist, Johnny Turner Bass, 38, of Dunn, was driving a tractor-trailer for Goldsboro Iron an Metal Co.
*A driver was injured and the car that he was operating was demolished in a wreck at 7:53 a.m. Monday on N.C. 111 near Jack Edmundson Road, the Highway Patrol said. Toby Sean Melton, 27, of Wilson was released after emergency-room treatment. He was charged with driving left of center after the car ran off the right side, came back across the road out of control and struck the left ditch. The 18-year-old car was valued at $1,500.
Car break-ins
Several residents in southeastern Wayne County may have learned a valuable lesson this week. Seven unlocked vehicles were broken into between Monday and Tuesday, sheriff's deputies said.
A pocketbook with eyeglasses and personal papers was stolen from one vehicle in the 1400 block of Mark Herring Road. The property, owned by A.W. Stainback, was valued at $140. Nothing was reported stolen from the other vehicles.
However, one car in the 1200 block of Mark Herring Road was damaged when fuel injector cleaner was poured on the seat, reports said. Damage was estimated at $50 to the car, owned by Clayton Rollins.
The other cars were parked on Mark Herring Road or Zion Church Road.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A 52-inch television, a video cassette recorder, a push lawn mower, two phones, a Chow dog and $15 were stolen between Friday and Tuesday from a home in the 100 block of Bea's Lane, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Derrick Darden, put a $3,275 value on the property. No sign of forced entry was reported.
*Two purses were stolen between Monday and Tuesday after two vehicle windows were smashed in the 500 block of Stadium Drive, Goldsboro police said. One purse, owned by a resident Anita Bryant, was valued at $30. The other purse, valued at $80, was owned by another resident, Quianna Bryant. Damages were set at $400.
*Video-game equipment, a compact disc player and a cordless phone were stolen Tuesday after a window was smashed in a home in the 100 block of Nicholas Drive, deputies said. The resident, V.A. Ardis, estimated the value of the stolen property at $575 and damage at $150.
*A gray, four-door 1988 Lincoln Town Car was stolen between Tuesday and dawn today from the 300 block of Townsend Road, deputies said. The owner and resident, Philip William Steiner, said the car was worth $500.
*Stop arms were removed from 13 school buses between Tuesday and dawn today at Southern Wayne High School, deputies said. Damages were set at $200.
Shooting
An 23-year-old man, now an inmate at Neuse Correctional Institution, was charged Tuesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill while inflicting serious injury.
Robert Orvan Garris II was accused of shooting a person who was getting into a car on Oct. 17. The unidentified victim was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released. Garris' secured bond was set at $75,000.
Missing
A 14-year-old boy from Mount Olive was reported missing Tuesday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Akeem Alonzo McKinney of 105 Garner Court was described as black, 5-feet-5 and 160 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.
When he was seen last at 7 a.m. Tuesday, he was wearing a blue shirt, blue jeans, a blue jacket and blue and white shoes. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
