Local student is collegiate Heisman finalist

Will Collins, a senior at Eastern Wayne High School, was named one of 18 state finalists for the Wendy's High School Heisman award.
Presented in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman Trophy, the prestigious award honors high school seniors who best exemplify the combination of citizenship, scholastics, and athletics. The two state winners, from Raleigh and Greensboro, will go on to the national level competition.
Collins is ranked 15th in his class of 289 students. A member of the Key Club and National Honor Society, he was a junior marshal. He is currently president of the school's FFA.
He has participated in cross-country and outdoor track all four years of high school and indoor track for one year. He has been on several championship teams and was named most valuable player in cross country for three years in a row.
He plans are to attend East Carolina University, where he received a scholarship in cross country and track.
