Guard to leave
National Guardsmen from South Carolina left Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on Friday after serving two years.
The Guard arrived after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to help provide security on base. The Guardsmen were with the 163rd Combat Support Battalion, based in Varnville, S.C.
The Guardsmen worked at the security gates, in the visitor's center and on the flight lines. They also assisted the Air Force dog handlers.
Advent services
The rush of the holiday season can cause even the most devout to lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas.
Advent services have been scheduled to provide an opportunity for preparation, prayer and reflection.
Noon services will be held four Wednesdays, beginning this Wednesday and ending on Dec. 22, at the First Christian Church, 1609 E. Ash St.
Members of Goldsboro ministers' group, Clergy Living in Faith and Friendship, are sponsoring the services, which will include a short sermon, prayers, hymns and an offering to be divided between The Community Soup Kitchen and the Lighthouse battered-women's shelter.
The ministers' congregations will take turns providing a light lunch at 12:30. The cost will be $3.
Duplin resignation
A Duplin County school board member has resigned his seat after moving out of the district.
Jeff Miller of Albertson has two years remaining on his term serving District 2, which includes the Wolfescape, Glisson, Albertson and Smith-Cabin precincts of northern Duplin.
Officials of the Democratic Party will meet Monday night to fill the vacancy. Miller is a Democrat.
The party's Executive Committee will meet in the law library of the County Courthouse at 7:30 p.m. Any District 2 Democrats interested in serving the term are invited to the meeting or can call Jesse Williams, chairman of the Duplin Democratic Party, at 910-298-3719.
Trade talk
Wayne Community College's last "lunch-and-learn" session on America's role in the world will be held Wednesday.
Dr. Tim McKeown, professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will lead the discussion on "The Politics of International Trade."
The event, made possible through a "By the People: America in the World" grant funded by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in Room 145 of the Dogwood Building on campus. For more information, call 735-5151.
