Shooting victim was Dudley man

DUDLEY -- A man who was fatally shot Friday, then drove away and crashed into a home has been identified as 37-year-old Johnny Ray Walston of 842 Genoa Road, Dudley.
Wayne County Sheriff's Capt. George Raecher said Walston had been shot once in the chest at a mobile home at 205 Ruskin Road.
Walston's body was shipped to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill for an au-topsy.
A handgun has been recovered and will be examined to determine if it was the murder weapon, Raecher said.
Walston was shot Friday in Christopher Stancil's home, Raecher said. The victim then staggered to his pickup truck and drove about three-tenths of mile to Ruskin and Outlaw roads. Raecher said.
At that point, Walston lost control of the pickup, and it ran off the road and slammed into a home.
Sheriff's deputies responded after Wayne County Emergency Services had received a 911 call at 8:37 a.m. that a man had been shot on Ruskin Road and then had driven away in a pickup.
Raecher said Saturday that sheriff's detectives interviewed numerous people Friday. He added that they were following up on leads and had more interviews to do.
The detective were working closely with the District Attorney's Office to determine if charges will be filed and the State Bureau of Investigation crime lab that has received evidence that will be analyzed. Raecher said he also is awaiting a preliminary autopsy report from the state Medical Examiner's Office.
Detectives Sgts. Mike Kabler and Dean Roscoe and Detective Tommy Flores have been assigned to lead the investigation.
No arrests have been made.
