NAACP honors Manetta Stovall for her dedication to community

Manetta Cox Stovall was honored Saturday night by the Wayne County branch of the NAACP.
The award was presented at the organization's Freedom Fund Banquet in honor of Mrs. Stovall's commitment to education, community and church.
Mrs. Stovall was a teacher for 36 years and worked in Wayne County schools.
She was born in Goldsboro and graduated with honors from Dillard High School in 1944. She was one of the first majorettes for the school's first band.
She graduated from Virginia State University in 1944 with a bachelor of science degree in intermediate education and a minor in music education in 1948.
She joined the NAACP while in college. She and her husband, Dr. O.R. Stovall Jr., are both Heritage Members of the NAACP.
She is a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, where she serves as the assistant organist and chairman of the membership committee. She was building chairman for the new St. Andrews Church.
Her civic, community and church involvement include the following: member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and music chairman; charter member of the Continental Society; past president of the Old North State Dental Auxiliary; assistant secretary of the National Dental Auxiliary; member of the Wayne County Mental Health Board; member of the WAGES board of directors; past president of N.C. Association of Educators; past secretary of the Association of Classroom Teachers; past president of the Alphabet Club; and chairman of the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet.
Her educational awards include: National Science Foundation; featured in the Goldsboro News-Argus as Creative Teacher; and the recipient of the Long Leaf Pine from former Gov. Jim Hunt.
She has received music awards from Virginia State University, First African Baptist Church Chancellor Choir, and the Gold-Wayne Chapter of N.C. Central University Alumni Association, of which she is an honorary member.
She and her husband have four children: Dr. Sandra M. Stovall, DDS; Yvonne C. Rouse, R.N.; Dr. Orlando R. Stovall, III, DDS; and Anthony R. Stovall, printer and artist.
She has four grandchildren: Lillienne M. Rouse, graduate of Winston-Salem State University; Jonelle R. Stovall, graduate of Duke University; Kimberly S. Stovall, student at East Carolina University; and Ricky D. Williams, student at ECU.
