Two Goldsboro High students nominated for national award

Two Goldsboro High School students have been nominated for the national Wendy's High School Heisman Award.
Presented in conjunction with the collegiate Heisman Trophy, it honors the high school seniors who best exemplify the combination of citizenship, scholastics and athletics.

Adrian Collins and Ashleyn James were nominated by Principal Patricia Burden for their academic aptitude, athletic talent and commitment to their communities.
"We believe it's important to recognize our young people not just for what they do in the classroom or on the field, but their contributions to communities," she said. "The Wendy's High School Heisman is a great way to showcase their diverse achievements for all to see."
Adrian has been a member of the varsity basketball team, the Goldsboro Recreation and Parks Committee and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society.
Ashelyn has been a class representative, president of the National Honor Society, history club and Future Teachers of America; has been captain of the women's basketball, volleyball and track teams; is a two-time volleyball MVP; was named All-Conference in two other sports; and has participated in numerous community service efforts as a volunteer, including the SHARE Project Food Drive.
The program was begun 10 years ago as a partnership between Wendy's restaurants, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Heisman Memorial Trophy.
"These students are truly in a league of their own," says Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy and the program's spokesman. "Each student nominated for the award has gone above and beyond expectations to help those in need, enhance their education and pursue their dreams."
The 12 national finalists will be invited for an all-expense-paid trip to New York City on Dec. 10 through 12 to participate in the Heisman weekend festivities. ESPN2 will feature all 12 national finalists during award ceremonies on Dec. 12.
